DH Frosty Whizkid is an 11-year-old finished bridle horse with a little over $500 RHAA/NRCHA earnings in the boxing/box drive from limited showing. This mare has a big motor & can go all day. HUGE stopper, great circler, pluses her spins. Non-pro friendly and would even be suitable for an experienced youth under direction of a trainer. She’s been a once in a lifetime ride for me & is ready to teach someone else the ropes of the reining and cowhorse world. Been used outside on the ranch, heeled off of & I’ve even breakaway roped off her. She does require a little maintenance so she’s priced accordingly.

šŸ™ŒšŸ¼ we preach it here! Don’t let your dream horse pass you by based solely upon height or a ā€œnon-conformationally correctā€ pastern.

We’ve helped hundreds of horses find new best friends over the years... But more so, we’ve answered thousands of inquiries. I’ll say it again like I say every year, in case someone out there needs to hear this...

HOW TO FIND YOUR ā€œUNICORNā€

1. PARAMETERS: Sticking to your ā€œparametersā€ is only hurting your search. This is like when you have a friend who says they’ll only date a guy over 6 feet tall. Would you turn down meeting your soul mate because he’s 5’11ā€? I’ve learned from many good Horsemen over the years and the saying is true: God never made a good horse in a bad color. The number of times that people are looking for a precise height or a precise color and I think I have the perfect match for them to fulfill all their dreams, but they won’t budge 1 inch on height in either direction. I can tell you that my current 17 hand horse feels much smaller than my current 15.3h horse. It’s much more about their barrel and their neck set and then the height of their withers. Stop looking for the horse that is ā€œ5-7 years old 16.2-17.0h bay or grey gelding.ā€ You are only sabotaging your own search here.

2. WRONG QUESTIONS: When people call about horses, I tell them what kind of rider he needs and what the horse wants to do for a living. Why does NO ONE ever ask that?! They ask how fancy his trot is or how his dressage score was last weekend or how many ribbons he has or how tall he is. They don’t ever ask, ā€œWill he tolerate my mistakes? Will he make up where I’m lacking? Can I handle this horse? Does he have the same goals that I do?ā€

3. WRONG PRIORITIES: I always teach my students this lesson. My ā€œkeeperā€ horse as a 4yo was the worst mover in the barn. Choppy trot, canter like a tractor trailer on ice, pads on his feet, and some seriously unimpressive knees. If I pulled him out of the stall for you at a sales appointment at 4 years old, you would tell me to put him away! Then he won 3 events at 5yo. At 6 he’s a dream to ride because we’ve put in serious sweat equity for three years. I’m going to burst your bubble here. Unless you’re trying to literally win the Olympics, you don’t need the best mover in the barn. Find the horse that makes you SMILE, that you want to ride every day, the one you can train. Beyond that, you can teach it to win the dressage if you work hard enough. Heck, the worst mover I’ve ever owned won a dozen upper level events and got our Bronze Medal in dressage, and if you saw him today you’d swear that was the best canter you’ve ever ridden. When you’re shopping, don’t buy for the fancy trot. Find the horse that makes you smile.

4. MAINTENANCE: The number of people who put in search ads, ā€œabsolutely no maintenanceā€œ or ask me if he has to wear shoes. So you’re telling me if I can find you your perfect unicorn that will make you happy for the rest of his life and you have to give him hock injections once a year, you wouldn’t do it? Because that’s about what you’re spending on your Starbucks this month. If you find a horse that will take care of you, you need to take care of it. Period.

5. VETTINGS: It’s been said by a million people so I’ll keep it brief. Vettings are a fact finding mission, not an attempt to rule out every horse you meet. No one can predict the future—-I’ve had upper level horses that would have failed as 4yos who never missed an event in their lives. I’ve seen vets give two thumbs up to horses who dropped dead a week later from a heart problem. Vets are our greatest resource, but they aren’t fortune tellers. Any good vetting WILL find something. Have your trainer help you understand what is realistic when the vet jargon sounds scary.

Here’s hoping that this list helps someone searching somewhere. Because I know over the years in my career, if I had stuck to my parameters and broken my rules, I would not have bought any of my eventual upper level horses. I would have missed out on so many special horses in my life, because I didn’t want a 3yo or I didn’t want him to be 15.3h or his ankles aren’t pretty.

When you find a horse that you like to ride and it makes you happy, that’s really all that matters. ā¤ļø

šŸ›‘STOP šŸ›‘ —"Simon Saysā€ he is the perfect gelding you’ve been searching high and low for! This 11 year old, 15.1 hand Quarter Horse gelding has professional training with Jenna Seal Performance Horses. With the smoothest jog, beautiful lope, and steady walk Simon has been the go-to for our beginner riders down the trail. He is the type that everyone wants in their barn to either take to town for the local playday, ride out on the ranch with your rope packed, or just leisurely go down the trail on the weekends without the funny business!

Simon is the sweetest, and friendliest gelding and is the same horse day in and day out. He saddles up and rides off every day right out of his stall, on a loose neck rein and responds well to leg pressure. Simon has been put to the test and has passed our desensitizing protocol of tarps, ropes, logs, bridges, donkeys, cattle, tractors, cars, and arena traffic. He has been ridden out alone down the trail, hauled alone and is easy to load/unload. He makes riding around the arena a pure joy, whether he is surrounded by a group of horses or is just out to get his exercise alone that day. Simon is athletic and truly enjoys getting out to be rode. Point him in the direction you want to go and he will always get you there safely. Simon excels down the trail, and will cross ANYTHING in sight. Whatever job you give him to do he will do it with style!

With Simon’s stride, he is the perfect height to really extend out and cover ground. Those riders looking for a more solid, taller, stouter gelding will find Simon to be exactly that—THE PERFECT SIZE. Simon is easy to own; he loves people and displays the respect and manners of a true gentleman. He is playful & gets along great with the other horses when turned out. UTD on all care; farrier, vet, deworming etc.

SOLDāš ļø

It’s easy to overlook a simple bay horse, but I am here to tell you, ā€˜Rolo’ is anything but ordinary. When you think about ā€˜Rolo’, the phrase, ā€œoften replicated, but never duplicatedā€ comes to mind. AQHA registered ā€œTheChocolateFaktoryā€ā€” Rolo is a 6-year-old, 15 hand, dark ā€˜chocolatey’ bay, gelding that is just as SWEET as they come. You name it—Rolo has been around the block, stopped to take a picture, and then done it in his sleep. He is one of the greatest assets you will find in your barn! He is worth his weight in GOLD. This 6-year-olds resume is impressive; with loads of experience in and out of the arena & professional training under his belt, you can’t find a better versatile gelding. Rolo carries himself with such balance and correctness, he could easily be transitioned over into the show pen for ranch riding/ranch rail classes and is quiet enough for any level of rider to manage and fall in love with.

Rolo rides around in the arena super soft in the face, with full control of his shoulders, hip & hind end, he always puts you in the best position to be successful. This gelding has the most talent I’ve seen in a younger one, in a long time!!! And not to mention his willingness; this guy will do ANYTHING you ask him to. Go down the trail and through the water, across rocks, up and down hills, over jumps, across logs, through the Walmart parking lot….WITH carts/buggies & trash collectors all around him…yes you heard that right. Rope the dummy, ride next to traffic—cars, semis, bicycles, take him for a stroll through the neighborhood, ride him at night in the dark and he won’t even bat an eye! This guy is no stranger to town. Rolo has had miles and miles of northern countryside trails on his resume and has been ridden many places near and far—big sky country of Wyoming, northeastern rolling green hills of Illinois, the wooded hills of central Texas and many places in-between. Whether it’s checking fence, cattle, or simply enjoying the trails in the gorgeous mountainsides, Rolo is the first one in my string I go to catch, simply because there is NO funny business. I do not have to worry about Rolo spooking or darting off with even the most inexperienced level of riders. Rolo is the confidence booster you need on those tough days!! My favorite experience checking cows to date has been a-back of Rolo. The only way to get into the far northern pasture was on horseback down a steep, STEEP mountainous hillside. My heart was telling me no way in the world was I going to make it down the 40-degree angle slope; I was TERRIFIED. But, Rolo slowly, sure-footedly and not to mention, gracefully, took me down the mountainside with full confidence, never batting an eye. He is so forgiving with accidental rider queues (including me screaming and holding on for dear life down the treacherous mountain side). I was SO thankful for him that day & will spend the rest of my day's letting him know what a good boy he is for taking care of me. Rolo’s confidence shines through whether he is out by himself on the trail, or in a group with all your friends.

With no surprise, this remarkable gelding goes back to some of the oldest cow-horse foundation lines. Quick Little Lena is known for stamping his offspring with bone and size, siring multiple barrel and roping money earners. Rolo was destined for greatness simply from the start of his bloodlines. His dam’s side is no less remarkable—with old foundation ranch horse lines, siring multiple NCHA money winners, Rolo’s lineage speaks for itself.

Rolo is one of the horses you look forward to riding, simply for his ground manners. Easy going, meets you at the gate in the morning to be haltered, rides and works all morning, comes back up in the afternoons to be scratched and loved on, even after a hard day of work. He is easily one of the most interactive geldings I’ve been around—he is eager to have your attention without being pushy or overbearing. He knows and minds his manners to brush, bathe, and saddle. On the lower end of the pecking order, he does great turned out in the pasture with others or stalled by himself. Rolo lives to please!! He will easily become your favorite gelding, & your farrier will be thanking YOU for such an easy horse to shoe! UTD on all shots, vaccinations, trimming and vet work.
