Breeding Discussion: ICSI vs. Traditional Embryo Transfer

With all the advancements in equine reproduction, breeders now have more options than ever.

Two of the most talked about methods right now are ICSI (Intracytoplasmic S***m Injection) and traditional embryo flushing/transfer.

For those who may not be familiar:

Traditional ET (Embryo Flush)
• Mare is bred normally with cooled or frozen semen
• Embryo is flushed from the uterus around day 7–8
• Embryo is transferred into a recipient mare

ICSI
• Eggs (oocytes) are aspirated directly from the mare’s ovaries
• A single s***m cell is injected into the egg in the lab
• The embryo is grown in culture and then transferred into a recipient mare

ICSI has become very popular for:
• Mares that don’t flush well
• Performance mares still competing
• Using very limited semen from valuable stallions

However, traditional embryo flushing is still widely used and can be more cost effective when the mare is a good embryo producer.

Breeders, we’re curious about your experiences 👇

Have you had better success with ICSI or traditional embryo transfer?
Or do you choose based on the individual mare?

Let’s hear your thoughts.

🚨 Breeding Season Hot Take: 🚨
Mare owners… stop blaming “bad semen” before you check THIS. 👀

One of the biggest issues we see every year isn’t the stallion…
and it isn’t even the mare…

It’s EXPECTATIONS.

A lot of people assume:
💉 one shipment = one cycle = pregnant mare

But breeding doesn’t work like ordering Amazon Prime 😅

Because the truth is:
✔️ not every mare will ovulate on schedule
✔️ not every uterus responds the same
✔️ not every cycle is “perfect”
✔️ not every mare should be bred the same way
✔️ and not every mare should be bred every time she shows a follicle

Sometimes the smartest thing you can do is…
🛑 wait a cycle
🛑 treat inflammation
🛑 fix body condition
🛑 adjust timing
🛑 improve communication between vet + stallion station

We would rather do it right than do it rushed.
Because a live foal is the goal… not just a pregnancy check.

What do you think is the biggest problem during breeding season?

A) timing
B)mare management
C) vet communication
D) semen handling/shipping
E) unrealistic expectations
