Global Startup Investment Reaches a Record High as AI Funding Surges
Investors poured $300 billion into startups globally in the first quarter of 2026, an unprecedented all-time high for venture capital investment. The total represented a surge of more than 150% compared with both the previous quarter and the same period a year earlier. The quarter alone accounted for close to 70% of all venture spending recorded in 2025.
Artificial intelligence dominated the quarter, attracting $242 billion, or 80% of global venture funding. Four of the five largest startup rounds ever recorded were closed in this period. OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and Waymo collectively raised $188 billion, more than 65% of the global total. The Unicorn Board added $900 billion in valuation, the largest quarterly increase on record.
Investment was disproportionately concentrated in the United States, which received $250 billion, or 83% of the global total. China was the second-largest market with $16.1 billion, and the United Kingdom was third with $7.4 billion. Late-stage funding reached $246.6 billion, up 205% year over year, while early-stage funding rose 41% and seed funding climbed 31%.
