Earlier this year, we were contacted by a new non-profit who needed help with their logo, branding, and website. We met with them and talked about who they are, their back stories, and this new venture. They began helping veterans heal and bring back their sense of purpose through horsemanship, livestock handling, hands-on trade skills, and moral principals. Their name is Forged Valor and we are proud to partner with them on everything from their logo to website to logo merch. Their work changes people’s lives and we appreciate them trusting us with their brand.

SilverLining Design brought home a Silver ADDY from the Western Virginia American Advertising Federation Awards Gala in Roanoke on February 22. We were awarded a Silver ADDY for excellence in packaging for the Cabernet Franc Reserve wine labels I designed for The Homeplace Vineyard. It's an honor to win an award in this industry with so many great designers and agencies in the region. We wouldn't be able to do any of this work if it weren't for clients trusting us with their brand. Thanks to Homeplace Vineyard for asking me to design their very first reserve wine label.

I recently found my very first freelance business card that I used right out of college while I worked at The Roanoke Times. That made me dig around to find each iteration of my card through the years. It's fascinating to see the changes and to think about how much printing, technology, and this business in general have changed since 1995. SilverLining Design has changed too from being exclusively me to also including other designers, writers, marketers, web developers, and project managers. I'm proud of where I've been and especially where we are now.

Even though our family is getting out of the wine business in the spring, I plan to stay involved in the industry through design. The Homeplace Vineyard asked me to design a special label for their first Cabernet Franc Reserve. I am really happy with how it turned out and I always love working with friends! If you're near Chatham tomorrow, stop at their place and try the Reserve.

I immediately said yes to designing the Brain Injury Rehab informational brochure for Carilion Clinic's Inpatient Rehab Services. This is where my daughter, Kaylee, spent almost 3 months of her recovery, so this place is very special to my family. I not only designed it, I also did the photography on the inside of the facility. And yes, that's Kaylee in the photo on the first page, but over a year from being released from rehab. I am so glad they asked me to do this. What I can give back to them is so tiny compared to what they gave us, but I'm proud to be part of this project.

The newest issue of the Patrick County Magazine is on the shelves! You can pick up a copy at the Patrick County Visitors Center (Visit Patrick County, VA) and the Patrick County Chamber of Commerce as well as many local businesses in and around the county. Read about the famous Wood Brothers Racing family, the 2023 Virginia High School champion baseball team, the Historic Star Theatre, the Reynolds Homestead, and other county attractions and history. We are proud to be able to showcase our home for locals and tourists alike, and enjoy partnering with the Chamber and Tourism to produce these each Spring and Fall.

We were recognized this past Saturday at the Western Virginia American Advertising Awards gala with a Silver Award in the Print Advertising category. We won this award for Patrick County Tourism's ad in the Virginia Travel Guide. The entire competition had 134 entries from ad agencies, design shops, and in-house creative teams from across the western half of the state. We are proud of our work with clients and it means so much to be recognized by our peers in the industry. And then the other surprise was that Carilion Clinic's video about Kaylee also won a Silver Award in the Online Film, Video and Sound category. I also cried when they played the video at the awards ceremony. It was a good night!

I had the honor of designing the Fall 2023 issue of the Virginia Tech Magazine. The designer/art director for the magazine took a new job before this issue started and they could not hire a new designer in time for the fall publication, so they reached out to me to see if I could get this issue to press and not miss their deadline. I was swamped with work, but when the Mothership calls (I'm a proud Virginia Tech Hokie), there's no way I'm going to say no. It means so much to me that they entrusted me to help create this issue. I love my work in higher education, but this campus holds a special place in my heart.

I'd like to thank University of Lynchburg for asking me to help design part of their 2023 fall magazine. This was the first project that I have worked with the Communications team there, although I have worked with the executive director and their photographer before. Everyone on their team was wonderful to work with and allowed me to step in and help them out due to an overflow of work in their department. I really appreciate that they thought of me and I hope there will be other collaborations.

If you haven't seen the new Surry Living Magazine, you need to check it out. The new owners relaunched the magazine and tasked us with the redesign and build of the magazine. We rethought the layout, the printing, binding, departments and features, while keeping the heart of the previous version. Our first issue together was the October 2023 publication and our third issue, December 2023, just hit distribution. We love the vision of the new owners and what they want to do with it. We are thankful they entrusted us to help them bring it to life.

Saturday night was the Roanoke Chapter of the American Advertising Federation's awards gala. It was a beautiful evening of drinks, dinner, and friends. I entered some projects into the competition and found out that one of them won! In each category, there are only 2 winners awarded out of all of the entries across western Virginia, and we brought home a Gold for the Sweet Briar College Viewbook. I worked on this project with Amy Ostroth, Sybil Slate, and Cassie Foster Evans and we were all proud of the piece. But to find out that marketing and design judges held it in such high regard means so much to each of us. All of the hard work has extra validation now. I'm incredibly proud of the piece and of the people I get to work with on projects like this. I would have enjoyed this evening if we hadn't won anything, but winning does make it a little sweeter. Thanks to the AAF Roanoke officers and volunteers that put this on. It was amazing.
