🐾 Nobody knows your dog like you do. That's exactly why the best pet portraits come from the moments that don't go as planned.

This is Cassie. Cassie never cared for catching treats out of the air. Not once. Toss one her way and she'd close her eyes, hold perfectly still, and let it bounce right off her head like it had personally offended her. So of course, when it came time to photograph her, I tossed a whole handful. I knew exactly what she'd do, and I knew it would be the one frame I'd keep forever.

That's the part most people miss about pet portraits. The perfect sit-and-stay shot is lovely, but it isn't the picture that makes you laugh out loud five years from now. It's the outtake. The ear flip. The sneeze mid-shutter. The treat that never got caught. You already know those quirks better than anyone, and that's what we build the session around. "I wish I had better pictures of her."

I hear that sentence more than any other as a dog portrait photographer. It almost always comes after the dog is gone. The phone is full of blurry snapshots and half a face behind a couch cushion, and the frames that actually look like the dog you loved are nowhere to be found.

I understand it better than I'd like to. We lost our golden retriever, Cassie, after sixteen years together. Sixteen is a remarkable run for a golden. It still went by in a blink.

Cassie carried a stuffed animal on nearly every walk, tucked in her mouth like a prized possession. In the spring and fall she'd lie on the pool cover and let the cool water rise up around her aching hips. She grew up alongside our kids. She was also my first model. Every new light, every new modifier, she sat for it and looked straight into the lens.

Now that she's gone, the photographs are what remain. Not the leash. Not the bed. Not the bowl. The pictures. Because of my work, I have hundreds of carefully lit portraits of her, and they are some of the most valuable things I own.

Here's the hard truth. Most dogs get ten to thirteen years, and many large breeds get less. Nobody plans a portrait session for the gray muzzle stage, and by then it often feels too late.

So please don't wait. Photograph your dog now, while they're chasing the ball and stealing socks. A portrait made in their prime holds the light in the eyes and the tilt of the head that was theirs alone. Printed and framed, it outlasts any phone and gets passed down to the kids who grew up with them.

I photograph dogs in my Suffield studio and on location across Connecticut and Western Massachusetts, with the same lighting and patience I bring to every headshot. You're welcome in the frame too. Those are the images families treasure most.

Cassie was the best. I'm grateful I have her portraits, and I want that for you.
