The Sierra Leonean government appears to have taken a significant step forward in innovating and transforming the country's energy sector.

Authorities have attracted investment from individuals, businesses, and the World Bank in wind, gas, solar, hydroelectric, and thermal power projects, complementing the financial commitments and resources allocated by the state.

Several major cities, including Masiaka and Kamakwie in the north, Moyamba in the south, and Kono in the east, have been equipped with off-grid power generation and distribution facilities.

Meanwhile, the capital, Freetown, is slated to be connected to a state-of-the-art gas-fired power plant.

The historic town of Bonthe Island is also benefiting from a wind turbine system, an unprecedented initiative for the region, as shown in this video documenting the ongoing installation work.

El Malick Ndiaye, president of Senegalโ€™s National Assembly, has resigned.

โ€œAfter deep reflection, matured in silence, responsibility, and a sense of duty to the state, I have decided to resign from my position,โ€ he said, describing it as a personal choice guided by the nationโ€™s best interests.

Ndiaye thanked parliamentarians, staff and supporters of the PASTEF party, pledging to continue serving Senegalโ€™s democracy and unity outside the assembly.

PARAMOUNT CHIEFTAINCY ELECTION UPDATE!

Issuing Authority: The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs (MLG&CA)

Election Type: Paramount Chieftaincy Election

1. Election Details

Chiefdom: Dodo Chiefdom

District: Kenema District

Province: Eastern Province

Election Date: Saturday, 23rd May 2026

2. Electoral Process Summary

The election proceeded with four (4) qualified candidates contesting, namely;

1. Gegbai Maada Jinna Francis
2. Gegbai karim Mohamed
3. Kpakra Faba Sulaiman
4. Njollah Junisa Musa

Traditional Authorities:

As no candidate secured the required majority in the first round, a runoff was conducted between the two leading candidates;
1. Gegbai Karim Mohamed
2. Kpakra Faba Sulaiman

Following the second round of voting, the results are as follows:(see results below).

The specific vote counts and the name of the newly elected Paramount Chief was formally declared by the Provisional Secretary from the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs (MLG&CA).

4. Oversight & Governance Validation

The electoral process was observed and validated by:

Assessor Chiefs: As mandated by the Chieftaincy Act, 2009, the appointed Assessor Chiefs have observed the entire process, including the runoff, to ensure legitimacy and traditional compliance.

Monitors: Senior officials from the ECSL and MLG&CA were present to oversee the conduct.

The final Attestation Document, endorsing the validity of the election and its result, was signed by the Assessor Chiefs and District Election Manager of Kenema District.
