"You talked for 65% of the consult." (Consultation conversion · teach · Trust Equation)

You are the smartest person in your consultations. That might be exactly why you keep losing them.

Here is the pattern I see constantly. A skilled attorney sits down with a prospect and starts doing what skilled attorneys do. Explaining the statute. Walking through the process. Listing the wins. It feels like generosity. To the person across the table it feels like a lecture they cannot wait to leave.

The Trust Equation shows why. Trust rises with credibility, reliability, and intimacy, and it falls with self-orientation, which sits underneath the whole thing. Every extra minute you spend talking about you pushes that bottom number up and drags trust down. Being right is not the same as being trusted.

So flip the ratio. Aim to talk 35 percent of the consultation and listen for the other 65. Their problem gets the hour. Your credentials get five focused minutes near the end, once you have earned the right to them. Want a simple check? Notice who is talking at the ten minute mark. If it is you, ask a question and stop.

What is your real talk-to-listen ratio in a consultation? Be honest with yourself before you answer.

"A family law attorney came to me converting at 40 percent. She thought she had a marketing problem.

Six weeks later: 68 percent. No new ads. No new website. Same leads calling the same number.

What changed was the 45 minutes inside the consultation room.

Most attorneys miss this distinction. Marketing is what gets the prospect to call you. The consultation is where you earn the retainer. Those are two completely different skills, and law school trains you for neither of them.

If you're converting at 40 percent, you don't need more leads. You need to stop losing the ones who already trust you enough to book a call.

That's the work I do. Ask me about it."

Back when I was running my firm, I used to prep for tomorrow's consultation by re-reading my notes in the car before I walked in. That was my strategy session. My objection framework. My fee prep. Me and a coffee.

selllegalservices.ai is what I wish I'd had then.

$25 a month gets you an AI advisor trained on the complete methodology from my book. DEEP, RESOLVE, VALUE, the Trust Equation. Every framework I use with my consulting clients.

Plus a private Slack of attorneys working the same problems you are — so when you get stuck on something real at 10pm, someone who's already lived it can weigh in.

Ask it how to handle a fee objection the night before the meeting. Get an answer that actually applies to legal work.

Is your calendar link accidentally costing you new business?

Dropping a cold link creates instant friction and makes potential clients feel unvalued, causing them to question if they should trust your firm. A simple, human shift in your booking strategy can instantly protect your conversion rates.

Here's the equation most attorneys have never seen.

Trust = (Credibility + Reliability + Intimacy) divided by Self-Orientation.

When a prospect hires a less-qualified competitor over you, it's almost never a credibility problem. You have the record. You have the credentials. They're not doubting you.

The problem is almost always the self-orientation denominator.

That's how much of the consultation was about you versus them. How many times you steered back to your firm's accomplishments. How quickly you stopped listening once you thought you understood the issue.

Lower the self-orientation, and everything else lands differently. Same credentials. Same stories. Same fee. Nothing else has to change.

Most of the work I do with clients is on this one variable. Once it's right, nothing else needs fixing.

A family law firm came to me losing four to five qualified consultations a week to competitors. That was the estimate when we started.

One year later, they'd added $400,000 in annual revenue. Same marketing spend. Same team. Same office.

The only thing that changed was what happened inside the consultation room. We rebuilt discovery using the DEEP framework. We rebuilt the fee conversation. That was it.

Here's the part that still gets me. Every one of those four to five prospects a week was already calling them. Already showing up. Already ready to become clients if the attorneys had known how.

$400,000 was sitting in the calendar the whole time.

If you don't know your consultation conversion rate, you don't know how much revenue you're leaving on the table.

What body language story are you telling during your client consultations?

Every firm I meet that's competing on price is doing the same thing wrong.

They're letting fees be the first real conversation.

When the prospect asks ""how much do you charge"" and the attorney answers directly, the whole consultation is effectively over. Now it's a price comparison. The prospect walks out and calls three other firms to see who's cheaper.

Premium clients don't buy on price. They buy on fit. On how heard they felt. On whether the attorney understood the actual problem underneath the legal question.

The VALUE framework in my book is about one thing: making sure value is the first conversation and fees are a consequence.

Do that and you stop competing on price. Because the prospect isn't shopping anymore. They've already decided.
