We had such a great time at the latest Making The City Smaller event at Clear Path for Veterans!

We experienced mocktail-making with Cristi Kaido of The Mindful Mixer and a conversation about nutrition from Emily Gozy of Nourished With Emily. It all took place in a room full of CNY business leaders and community members connecting with one another over shared values — thanks to MTCS, an organization that does truly meaningful work.

This is exactly the kind of community we love being part of — because great marketing starts with genuine relationships.

Thanks to Peter Ward, Mike Durkin, and the MTCS community for bringing it all together. 🙌

Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage and dedication will never be forgotten.

The Cowley team is closed today in observance of Memorial Day. We'll be back tomorrow, ready to get to work.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful day! 🇺🇸

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of attending the Onondaga Historical Association's OHA Medal Breakfast!

This year's recipients were truly inspiring:

🏅 Tim Fox: A trusted voice in Central New York broadcast media for decades.
🏅 Thomas Hunter: Contributing 30+ years of dedicated stewardship of Onondaga County's history at OHA.
🏅 InterFaith Works of Central New York: Celebrating 50 years of building a more equitable and connected community.

At Cowley, we believe that strong communities are built on shared stories, preserved history, and the people who show up — year after year — to do the work that matters. Events like this are a powerful reminder of why that work is so important.

Congratulations to all three recipients, and a big thank you to OHA for continuing to find ways to celebrate the legacy of our region. 🙌

Last night, we had the honor of attending the First Annual Syracuse Prize ceremony — and what an evening it was. 🏆

The Syracuse Prize, presented by CNY Arts, celebrates individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to creative expression, artistic access, and cultural equity right here in the City of Syracuse. Seeing that work recognized in such a meaningful way was truly inspiring.

We were proud to be a sponsor of this inaugural event, and to have designed the official Syracuse Prize logo. From concept to ceremony, it was a privilege to play a role in making this recognition a reality. A big thank you to Alex Korman, Executive Director of CNY Arts, for trusting us to help bring this vision to life!

Congratulations to the winner —Patrick Berry — to the finalists, and everyone in the room working to make Syracuse's creative community stronger. This is exactly the kind of work worth celebrating.

Here's to a new community tradition, and many more years of the Syracuse Prize! 🎨

At Cowley, staying connected to our community isn't just something we do — it's part of how we do our best work.

Our President, Gail Cowley, recently had a meeting at the INSPYRE Innovation Hub by CenterState, and while she was there, she got a firsthand look at something pretty exciting!

🚁 Amazon's local delivery drone is on display at INSPYRE — and if you haven't seen it yet, it's worth the trip. These would be the first delivery drones in New York State, and getting up close makes the future feel very, very real.

Being in spaces like INSPYRE — alongside regional innovators and forward-thinkers — keeps us sharp, informed, and deeply invested in the growth of Central New York.

And that's crucial for us, because we know great marketing doesn't happen in a vacuum...it happens when you understand the landscape your clients are operating in.

You might be wondering...

"How do we know if we're ready to hire a marketing agency?"

It's a fair thing to wonder. Bringing on an agency is an investment of both time and money, and the last thing we want is to work with a client who isn't in a position to get real value from it.

So here's our honest answer:

You're probably ready if any of these scenarios sound familiar:

You know your business is good at what it does — but your marketing doesn't reflect that. Your website feels outdated, your messaging is all over the place, or you struggle to explain clearly what sets you apart.

You've been doing marketing reactively. Posting when you remember to, sending emails sporadically, or saying yes to every advertising opportunity without a real strategy behind it.

You're at a growth inflection point. Maybe you're entering a new market, launching a new service, or simply ready to take things to the next level — and you know you can't get there without showing up more intentionally.

You don't have the internal bandwidth. Marketing keeps falling to the bottom of the priority list because everyone is too busy running the business.

If you nodded at even one of those — you're probably ready.

The truth is, the best time to invest in your marketing is before things feel urgent. Because when marketing is treated as a last resort rather than a long-term strategy, it rarely delivers the results you're hoping for.

What have we learned after 50 years in business?

As Cowley marks over half a century in business, we've been reflecting on what's actually kept us here — and it's not any single campaign, tool, or trend.

Here are the 5 big lessons:

1. Relationships outlast campaigns. Clients stay not because of one great idea we had, but because we show up, tell the truth, and treat their business like it's our own.

2. The best work happens when clients are collaborators, not customers. Our most successful projects aren't transactional. They come as a result of true partnerships built on trust, deep understanding, and a shared commitment to getting it right.

3. Consistency beats brilliance. (Although we love brilliance.) A single brilliant campaign is memorable. A consistent brand, year after year, is profitable.

4. The tools have changed. The fundamentals haven't. From print boards and paste-ups to websites, video, and AI — the technology and how we use it changes. But what drives results has never wavered: Clear strategy, understanding the audience, compelling messaging, and consistent ex*****on.

5. Culture is our competitive edge. Technology can be copied. Talent can be hired. But the specific way our team thinks, solves problems, and treats people? That can't be replicated — and it's what's kept our doors open for over 50 years.

Here's to the clients, partners, and team members who've made this journey what it is. The next chapter is just getting started.

We’d love to know: What's the most important business lesson you've learned over the years? Drop it in the comments below!

Potential clients always seem hesitant to ask this question at first, but it’s one that comes up often:

"What if we don't know where to start — or what we even need for an effective marketing plan?"

Here's the truth: This is one of the best questions you could ask. Most businesses we work with don't come to us with a neat checklist of marketing problems. They just come to us knowing that what they’re doing currently isn’t working. Maybe business growth has plateaued, their brand no longer reflects who they are, or they're tired of throwing things at the wall without a true strategy in place.

That's where we come in.

Our process starts with listening. We dig into the why behind your business, your goals, and your ideal audience, and then determine where the gaps are. From there, we help you build a clear picture of what's working, what isn't, and what to prioritize before we ever talk about tactics.

Whether that leads to a brand refresh, a new website, a content strategy, or a full marketing plan, every recommendation we make is built based on your specific situation. No cookie-cutter solutions here.

You don't need to have the answers before reaching out. It’s our job to find those!

At Cowley, clarity isn't just a part of our tagline — it's how we work, how we communicate, and how we help our clients show up in the world. So it only made sense to bring that same clarity here.

We're kicking off a new series answering the questions we hear most from clients and prospects.

First up:

"Do you only work with big companies?"

Short answer: Not at all — but we do have a sweet spot.

Cowley works predominantly with established small to medium-sized businesses in the B2B space. Think companies that have been around long enough to know what they do well, but are ready to show up in a way that actually reflects that.

Our clients span industries like manufacturing, professional services, healthcare, education, nonprofits, and municipalities — and what they share isn't a headcount or a revenue number. It's that they're ready to communicate more clearly, show up more consistently, and grow with intention.

Over 50 years in, we've learned that the businesses who benefit most from great marketing aren't always the biggest ones. They're just the ones willing to commit to doing it right.
