For decades, I’ve worked through the chaos of natural disasters, helping others understand the power and unpredictability of Mother Nature. Yesterday, however, I found myself on the other side of the story—as a Tampa homeowner and evacuee—sharing the anxiety of waiting and preparing for a Category 5 hurricane.
When my friend, CBS4’s Tania Francois asked if I’d be willing to speak about seeking refuge at my mom’s home near Fort Lauderdale, I said “yes.”
For decades, I’ve shown compassion while asking others to relive their most difficult moments. This time, it was my turn to open up.
Many have asked if I miss being in the field during moments like these. The truth is, I’m still telling stories—with empathy and honesty. But now, I also have the privilege of stepping back, spending time with family, and praying for the safety of everyone in the storm’s path.
