When it comes to sales and marketing, the two should be so intertwined that they are one and the same. Direct response marketing feeds your sales which you then continue to market to in a hyper targeted behavior in order to upsell, cross-sell and get referrals.
Old school sales systems have great fundamentals. Combined with the detailed targeting offered these days you can raise revenue significantly. Take a look at The Ultimate Sales Machine by Chet Holmes. It's a sales system bible but it lacks modern technology so combined with something like Optimized by Lee Odden and you get special sauce! Pig headed determination and discipline has always and will always work.

It's not about one trick, like getting attention with a bait and switch ;) but about a system that completes a loop from attention to repeat customer. If you get their attention, get it for the right reason, then deliver with a WOW factor and ask for the referral.
