One of the best ways to jump-start new ideas is to go out into the world and attend in-person events.

I went to in Austin a few weeks ago, and my wheels have been turning since I got home.

It wasn’t just the speakers and presentations that inspired me. It was the great conversations I had with people doing impressive work and cool things. I’m grateful for all the time I spent talking with Melissa Suzuno and Teresa Torres (while listening to jazz and eating delicious Texas BBQ).

I’m looking forward to bringing some of these new ideas to life over the next few months.

Cheers to all of the sponsors and donors who made the 5th Annual "Buzzed" Spelling Bee + Backpack Drive a success!

Over 630 backpacks are headed to kids in the community thanks to you! All proceeds will benefit project which serves more than 3,500 children annually.

A huge thanks goes out to Align HCM for sponsoring the event and to CFO Solutions LLC and for sponsoring rounds of the spelling bee.

Take a guess. Are these strategies or tactics?

Surprise!

All of them are tactics.

Not what you expected? Don’t feel bad. A lot of us get it wrong.

But the truth is...

Tactics are a part of a strategy.
You never start with a tactic.
You always start with a strategy.
The strategy tells you what tactics you need to reach your goal.

A strategy could be driving more traffic to your website by building organic seo.
The tactic for accomplishing that goal could be using blog posts to support your on-page seo.
The strategy is seo for driving traffic.
The tactic is publishing blog posts.

Start with a strategy.
Then, plug in tactics that go with that strategy.
Never execute a tactic without a strategy behind it.

Here's the great thing about digital content. You can publish, and then go back and edit and update over and over again.

It's not like writing copy for a brochure and printing 1,000 copies that you can never change. with digital content, you can make changes anytime with just a few clicks.

Keep that in mind as you create digital content.

While yes, you want your content to be good. Don't wait for perfect. Get it out there. Hit publish and know that you can always go back and revisit and improve it.

There is so much pressure to create, create, create for your business.

But the constant focus on content creation isn’t helping anyone.

Because the truth is there is no reason to create content just to create content.

The only reason to create content is to help you get closer to your goals.

You only need to create content when it has a clear purpose like: build brand awareness, generate leads, grow audience engagement, support sales teams, improve SEO, etc.

If you’re creating content and you don’t know why — stop!

Content creation isn’t a goal. It’s a means to help you get to a goal. So pull back and asses your goals then decide how content can help you get there.

When creating a website, it can be easy to get fixated on every single design element.

You want the site to look pretty and eye-catching -- and I get it. Beautiful websites are great to look at. But, they aren't always great for business.

Your website needs to do waaaaay more than just look pretty.

It needs to speak to your audience, tell them what to do, and give them an easy way to do it.

It needs to educate, engage, and convert.

It needs to turn interested audiences into leads and then buyers.

And, just looking pretty isn't going to do it.

So take look at your own site and see if you focused more on looks than function during your last redesign.

Earlier this week, I talked about why you need a COVID-19 landing page to communicate what's going on with your business during this crazy time.

I know. I know.

There is so much communication about COVID-19 -- and most of it is not necessary.

But, there are essential details that your customers need to hear.

1. What changes you've made. Let them know how you've adjusted to better serve them and keep your team safe.

2. How the changes impact them. Consider all the FAQs customers have and give them the answers -- especially if you run a business with pre-scheduled visits (like a hair salon) or reoccurring payments (like a gym membership).

3. How they can continue to do business with you. If you adjusted your offerings to serve clients in a different way, give them the details to work with you in a new way. And make it easy for them to take those steps (like adding a prominent click to order button).

4. How they can further support your business and employees. Let loyal customers know where they can donate, leave a review, share photos of their take-out order, or otherwise help promote your business during this time.

Put it all together on one landing page and you'll boost customer experience and brand loyalty and hopefully generate some sales in the process!
