Swipe right for a framework that will help you clarify your impact-driven business concept in it's seed stages!

If you're an impact-driven startup in an early stage, you probably shouldn't be using the business model canvas.

Why?

Because it covers a larger scope than is necessary.

When you're in the seed stage, you don't need to worry about partnerships, resources, and activities as much as customers, their problems, and your solution.

The partnerships, resources, and activities all will amplify the problem-solution fit you establish in your early stages. Before you establish problem-solution fit, they're just a distraction.

How do you solve a societal problem better than current solutions with a sustainable revenue model?

Finding and operationalizing the answers to this core question should drive your activities at an impact-driven startup.

I've created a tool to help you map out and document the answers. I call it the Lean Impact Startup Canvas. You can see how it works by swiping right!

Are your actions aligned with your power source?

In a NEW episode of the Designing Impact podcast, I talked to Breanne about creating a regenerative lifestyle that aligns with purpose and planet.

In this snippet, Breanne Gibson talks about what the concept of alignment and creating really feels like.

We also touched on the definition of regenerative lifestyle as one that always replenishes one’s energy. To which Breanne quips:

“I would say that's the aim, as in any system, and being a human being. There's always the ebb and flows...We're like, you know, a living being just like all the other living sentient beings on the planet, including the living Earth. So we want to create and design a lifestyle that's regenerative in what you said is replenishing our resources over time, and never hitting rock bottom.”

Check out this snippet of the episode Designing Sustainable Solutions with Communities and realize that no monumental change happens overnight.

As what Bill Reed relates in his story of how they learned from their own experiences in building communities, it takes practice—a trial and error of some sort—to move people to action.

Bill makes the connection with such clarity, between self transformation, and the kind of controlled cultivation of a community group. And how in that community group is placed in a situation where everyone's working towards a goal that's bigger than any individual tribe’s mentality—people are able to to drop walls within themselves, not even within what they love to do necessarily.

If you want to know more about his story in the context of this snippet, listen to the full episode.

In this part of the episode with Bill Reed, I asked him about how he was able to change the attitude of communities in his past projects in terms of sustainability.

What he gave as an answer is beautiful in itself. Truly, we are meant to sustain life, not technology. And the answer is in the framework of thinking.

As Bill further talks about life, he shared these words:

"Life is all about the process of evolving. And just in saying that, that is the key for everything.

So are we willing to evolve? Is our organization willing to evolve? Is our community and our ecosystem? Well, it's already evolving, whether we know it or not.

So how do we actually keep up with it and actually have a contributing a co-evolutionary relationship is the fundamental question about sustainability."

Check out this episode with Bill Reed and be inspired with the importance of sustainability in communities.

What does actual sustainable and systemic impact look like?

I'll tell you what it doesn't look like - a shoe company that gives away a pair of shoes to impoverished people for each pair sold.

This creates impact (gives people shoes), but it ignores every other part of the supply chain and other stakeholders.

Sustainable and systemic impact with this shoe company would instead look like:

- Equity and good wages for **all** employees
- Sustainably sourced materials
- An up-cycling program where old shoes can be returned and turned into other products

This helps the company because employees are more engaged in their work, they don't have to worry about sourcing when materials run low, and they can create new revenue streams from existing materials.

It creates systemic change in society because the employees of the company are being lifted out of poverty, and the manufacturing methods are engaging the circular economy, which will make other shoe companies take notice.

What is an example of systemic impact in business that you want to share?

Building a product without context will lead to failure.
But many people forget to build context when designing a product.
A few ways to build context:
- Get a sense of everyone who suffers from the problem you want to solve
- Understand the relationships between the main stakeholders in your solution
- Know the goals that drive success for the main stakeholders
In this clip, explains how building context helped him design his product.

“Like seeing the doctor for an annual exam, regularly assessing a business model is an important activity for any organization.”

Like their health, most social entrepreneurs take their business model for granted. They think it'll always work for them, and don't take the time to map it out and asses it.

However, this can lead to a few problems. Misalignment between revenue sources and social impact goals, a lack of strategic direction, and finding it difficult to pivot are all results of not having a holistic understanding of your business model.

Thankfully, it's not too complicated to map out your business model. Check out the link in my bio to walkthrough video I wrote about how to map out your business model and extract your key assumptions.

A tactic that will ALWAYS get you closer to product-market fit:

👉🏻 User Research.

Don't you wish that your users or clients were recommending you to all their friends?

That people would buy from you, and buy again?
That you didn't have to spend much on marketing to get your first 1,000 users?
This can be your future.
IF you ask your users what their problems are...

then turn those problems into insights, features, and benefits that you build into your product.

💸 For every person you research with, you also get a potential user or client. 💸

Here's a basic checklist for starting out
1. Find your assumptions.

Look at what you're assuming about your users' behavior and prioritize the assumptions that matter most for your success.
2. Find potential users where they are.

Go to the communities they frequent. DM them. Give them incentives to participate. Be their friend.
3. Interview with an open mind. Prepare your questionnaire and listen much more than you talk when interviewing users.
4. Look for patterns. Insights that come up multiple times are likely things you can build around.
Do you do user research? What are your problems with it? Let me know in the comments :)
