The eye of the Beholder

It's really interesting to me what appeals from one person to another when it comes to photography or art. A great portrait is a no brainer because the artist has been able to capture some personality characteristic that defines the subject.

But I just sat here and stared at a photo of a doormat that I took because the symmetry held my attention. But would I frame it and put it on the wall? I don't know. There's another photo I saw recently, which is a lovely photo, but it's just a black and white photo of a fishing boat at a dock. Decent composition, but there was something about it that appealed to the owner of the print.

Sometimes I'll take a photograph of something relatively mundane because the combination of colors or the symmetry of the objects catches my attention. Obviously, an interesting subject, well composed is always a winner, But I think the Eiffel Tower postcard market is pretty well covered...

But what I'm wondering is this: what is it that draws you into a piece of art? Is it the subject? The composition? The color? Or is it the artists interpretation/observation?
