England looked ready to end Argentina’s title defense, but Messi once again found a way to drag his team through when it mattered most.
The comparison with Cristiano Ronaldo is impossible to ignore.
Ronaldo played well for a 41-year-old, and what he was still able to contribute at that age was impressive. But his World Cup ended with Portugal’s underwhelming exit in the Round of 16.
Messi, meanwhile, is 39 years old and still deciding the biggest matches on the biggest stage.
That is the difference.
