In 1982 BuyRight International (now known as Excel Sportswear) was established with the mission of providing custom high quality supplies for school bookstores nationwide. As our customer base grew more and more clients asked if we could provide the same level of high quality t-shirts as our school supplies. Steve McCarroll, one of the founders loved the idea of creating top quality creative art for shirts and finding no other company (then nor now) that would provide original hand drawn art work design services it was an easy decision: Excel Sportswear was born. From day one Excel offered top quality hand drawn art designs inspired by the customers ideas. Back then for the first time students, teachers and faculties could create shirts to excite students, build school spirit and compete with the quality and variety of retail shirts. School shirts that were just cool. This same formula for schools is now duplicated for businesses, organizations and nonprofits - 25,000 customers strong. If you “care what you wear” then Excel should be your shirt provider. From the early 1980’s up until 1989 Excel hired and developed a top notch team of in house retail quality artists to create original art. Our first artist, Dean Dymerski, was not only instrumental in our launch but continues to create great graphics today as our senior artist. In the 80’s while the art was totally “in house” the printing was subcontracted to local printers, as many internet shirt providers do today. The problem was the printers couldn’t match the quality of the art work. It became apparent to match the quality of the art to the quality of the printing we were going to have to print our own shirts! In 1989 we opened our first plant and hired an expert in the screen print field with both production and art experience, Mike Zanolli. Mike is now the President of Excel. Mike and the professional hand picked team created our present day unique systems of printing garments. Our intricate art work has evolved and now requires special screens, specialized equipment and just the right mixture of inks. “Soft hand printing” was developed and these techniques have been improved upon to this day. Our techniques take time and a great amount of skill. Our production people are not “printers” they are craftsman. You can see and feel a demonstrable difference in Excel made products. Of course the world came our way as t-shirts are the single most common advertising product on the planet. We do not just create t-shirts, we create wonderful representations of your business, organization, school or non-profit. Our products reward your customers and employees, advertise your business, celebrate a special event or just simply show the world what you are passionate about. Our shirts are so good that almost 80% of our clients sell their shirts for a profit. Excel changed the customized t-shirt industry from "What do you want printed?” to “What do you want to say?"
