The Right Materials
Part 8 of my from concept to reality series on a custom 3-piece patch set for Motor Heads. Last week we got the center patch sorted out. This week we talk materials.

Once all three patches were digitized correctly it was time to think about what to actually stitch them on. I ordered black poly twill, which is the standard material used for professional embroidered patches. It holds up well, stitches cleanly and gives that crisp finished look you expect from a quality patch. After all the work that went into getting the digitizing right, I wanted to make sure the material was just as solid. What you are looking at here is the poly twill that would become the final Motor Heads Texas patch set.

Digitizing from Scratch

Part 7 of my from concept to reality series on a custom 3-piece patch set for Motor Heads. Last week the Etsy rocker file just was not cutting it. This week I rolled up my sleeves and built it myself.

When nothing else was working I decided to digitize the rockers completely from scratch. No template, no outside help, just me learning my software and figuring it out one step at a time. What you are looking at here is the final version of both rockers in Chroma Luxe, Motor Heads on top and Texas on the bottom, 28,761 stitches between the two of them. Getting the arch just right so it would lay flat and look professional on the vest took some trial and error but I got there. Sometimes the only way through is to do it yourself.

Sometimes the most meaningful projects are the ones that come with a story. This bookmark was commissioned by someone in our community who wanted something special for a young girl going through a difficult time. A bookmark embroidered with her name, Grace, in pink florals to brighten her day. Hand embroidery is a lost art and there is something really special about knowing that a piece made stitch by stitch by hand is being given as a gift to someone who needs a little light. It is a small thing but sometimes that is exactly what someone needs.

The Rocker Problem

Part 6 of my from concept to reality series on a custom 3-piece patch set for Motor Heads Texas. Last week we talked about the first test stitch and what I discovered when I finally held the patches in my hands. This week we dig into what went wrong and how I tried to fix it.
The rockers needed to be 2.5 inches tall to look right on the vest. I found a rocker outline file on Etsy and re-digitized them to see if it would work. You can see both attempts here. The bottom one is the Etsy file and as you can see it went way too far, almost a full semicircle. The top one is the rocker I digitized completely from scratch and is the one that made it onto the final vest. Sometimes the right answer only becomes clear after you have seen enough of the wrong ones.

First Test Stitch on Navy Fabric

Part 5 of my from concept to reality series on a custom 3-piece patch set we made for a Motorcycle club. Last week we looked at the proof sheet from the digitizing company. This week things get interesting.

Before stitching on the final material I always do a test stitch on scrap fabric first, no matter the complexity of the design. I was also learning something completely new at this stage, the faux marrow stitch. A true marrow stitch requires a specialized machine, but the faux version mimics that same professional edge finish.

Looking at the proof sheet I could see the original rockers were too skinny, so I went looking for a solution. I found a rocker outline file on Etsy that seemed perfect. It was advertised as a rocker outline designed as an applique file, which not only gave me a better rocker shape but also made executing the faux marrow stitch much easier. I also sized the center patch down at this point, using my husband's old patches as a reference.

What I did not realize until I stitched everything out and put it on the vest is that both the rockers and the center patch were still the wrong size. The center patch also did not fit the measurements I had been given for the vest. Sometimes it is best to follow the original plan. Making changes on my own without fully testing them first is what led to both the rocker and center patch issues. A good reminder that when you deviate from the original design, you have to be prepared to go back to the drawing board.

Part 4 of my from concept to reality series on a custom 3-piece patch set we made for the Motorcycle club. Last week we looked at the digital design his friend created. This week we are taking it into my embroidery software for the first time.
With the SVG file in hand, I sent it off to a digitizing company to have the full design converted into an embroidery file. Motor Heads across the top, the crossed pistons in the center and Texas across the bottom, all as one combined design. My thinking was that running it as one piece would cut down on machine time. What you are looking at here is the proof sheet, which is essentially a preview of how the design should stitch out. Looking at it now the rocker problem is pretty obvious, but at the time I was comparing it to the SVG I had been sent and it is a lot harder to catch on screen than it is when you see the physical stitch out in your hands.
