10 minute drawing of a man reading a book outside the Whitney Museum in NYC on a recent trip there. Not sure if he was smiling because he noticed me drawing him of if he was a little off-kilter, which I think was the case!

“Anxiety” This is a fairly large format for me… 18”x24”. The charcoal drawing was done in my new studio which takes up half of a small barn. It started out as just a sketch of a woman (clothed) I saw in a book. I was taken by her forlorn expression. I “declothed” her and placed her in an empty room. I then added the window and it achieved the feeling I was after - hopelessness. I thought I was done. I then decided to add the table & dead flowers. I thought I was done. But the room needed a view so I drew in the country road complete with mailboxes outside the window and at that time, I definitely thought I was done. But I still wasn’t satisfied so I added an oriental rug at the bottom to break up the monotony of the plain floor. Again, I thought I was done but decided to add in the wide planked, wooden floor as a final touch. Done! That’s how the entire drawing came to being and a little insight as to how my mind works. No preliminary drawings and nothing planned - just create as I go until I like it, or discard it. In this case, I think I’ll keep it. Hope you enjoy!

“Lunch in Salzburg”. I like to draw when I dine. Whenever I do an urban sketch like this, I try to capture the ambiance of what I am experiencing, not just the scene. The landscape, architecture and the diners around me all play their parts. During lunch at this beer garten, I noticed the woman near me was having herself a smoke. She was well dressed in a black and white patterned outfit and was probably a local that frequented the restaurant because she didn’t order anything. She was just enjoying the diners around her. The couple having wine were in an engaged conversation and obviously enjoying one another’s company. The architecture was inspiring (and difficult to draw) and the food, excellent. We had such a great lunch with good friends. We loved Salzburg! If you’ll notice, I had a little fun w/the tree!

I sat on the ground in the corner of this plaza, Hirschenplatz, in Lucerne, Switzerland and a drew this scene. I lasted about 3 hours before the cobblestones became imprinted onto my behind. I finished the drawing after returning home. This illustration had a better fate than another one I was working on, which I had worked about 6 hours on before a breakfast waiter dumped a cup of coffee onto it. Ah, life goes on and so does the ink work. Happy October all you Halloween freaks!

I did this quick sketch in Chamonix, France. We visited this charming little town recently as we toured the Alps. I stood on a corner, leaned on a lamppost and sketched the mountain range that included Mt. Blanc, the tallest mountain in the Alps, which was hidden behind clouds. These peaks were visible for about 5 minutes, the morning sun illuminating them before they also disappeared behind the clouds. The sketch is just 4” x 6” and you can order a 6x8 print on archival paper for $20, DM me and I’ll tell you how as it’s not available on my website yet.

“Paradise Lost” Everyone has a soft/hard, light/dark side. I guess you can say this is my softer artistic side. Its title is in reference to the state our world is currently in. The adage “you don’t know what you have ‘til it’s gone” applies now more than ever. I was struck by a 1970 photograph by Bea Nettles of a young hippie sitting in a rocking chair, staring into the distance. I placed her in a field of flowers - peaceful & content yet unaware of what the future may bring. Change is inevitable but enjoy the moment because the present could very well be the times you long for again. If you’d like to order a signed 10”x12” print on archival paper for $20, DM me and I’ll tell you how as it’s not available on my website yet.

“Brownie Thief” Brownies are mythical creatures in Scottish lore. Known for their brown skin, they’re said to help with household chores. I began this illustration with no intent other than drawing a Giant in a forest. The mythical little creatures just happened to appear — guiding my hand so to speak — so maybe they help with drawing chores too? I hope you enjoy and if you’d like to order a signed 10”x12” print for $20, DM me and I’ll tell you how as it’s not available on the website yet.
