National Coming Out Day was created in 1988 to commemorate the 1987 March on Washington for Gay and Le***an Rights, which reportedly drew over 200,000 protestors to the nation’s capital that Oct. 11.

Actor and singer Demi Lovato came out as nonbinary in May 2021 and said they would be changing their pronouns to they/them.

Lovato Tweeted to fans:
“Not only has my life been a journey for myself, I was also living for those on the other side of the cameras,” Lovato, who got their start on “Barney & Friends” and has had roles on shows like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Prison Break,”

“Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all — I am proud to let you know that I identify as nonbinary & will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward,”

“I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering”

To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we will be highlighting an influential Hispanic figure every week. For our fourth feature, we highlight Pedro Zamora. (Check our page to see our previous features!)
When Pedro Zamora began his journey as an actor on MTV's The Real World San Francisco in 1994, he had already been an active HIV/AIDS advocate and educator. At the age of 17, Pedro learned that he was a young man living with HIV and dedicated his life to raising awareness and educating his peers. He was one of the first openly gay men of color living with HIV/AIDS to be on a television series. His tragic death at the age of 22 created support for HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ advocacy.
Zamora's legacy as a world renowned HIV/AIDS educator and activist has inspired many to confront their fears, ignorance, and misconceptions about HIV/AIDS and the Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community.

To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we will be highlighting an influential Hispanic figure every week. For our third feature, we highlight Sylvia Mendez. (Check our page to see our previous features!)

American civil rights activist, Sylvia Mendez played an instrumental role in the Mendez v. Westminster case of 1946. The case resulted in the banning of racial segregation in California public schools. Her case also paved the way for the national ban on segregated schools seven years later (Brown Vs. Board of Education).

After retiring from a career as a pediatric nurse, Mendez devoted her life to telling the story of her Mexican-Puerto Rican family and the legacy of the case. In 2011 she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama for her advocacy for educational opportunities for “children of all backgrounds and all walks of life.”

To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we will be highlighting an influential Hispanic figure every week. For our second feature, we highlight Frida Kahlo. (Check our page to see previous features!)
The late world-renowned self-portrait painter, Frida Kahlo, was a Mexican woman who paved the road for artists, people with disabilities, and the LGBTQ+ community.
Kahol's artwork are incredibly intimate. Her artworks' messages and motifs may seem too obscure to interpret. When viewed through a contextual lens, however, the meanings behind her poignant paintings begin to materialize.
Her artwork displays disability through art, her attraction to both men and women, and her incredible talent in painting.

¡Hola!/Hello!
Today marks the beginning of the Hispanic Heritage Month. To celebrate, starting today - Oct 15th, we will be highlighting an influential hispanic figure every week. For our first feature, we would like to highlight AOC.
In just a few short years, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has become one of the major leading voices for Hispanic Americans in politics.
Also known by her initials AOC, Ocasio-Cortez was born in 1989 in the Bronx, New York to a Puerto Rican mother and a Bronx-born father of Puerto Rican descent. She excelled through high school after her family moved to the suburbs and was in her second year at Boston College when her dad tragically died of lung cancer in 2008.
She ran for New York’s 14th Congressional District in 2018 with a successful grassroots campaign.
Since her arrival in Congress, Ocasio-Cortez’s vocal support of left-leaning ideas, including co-sponsoring the Green New Deal package to combat climate change, has made her a popular figure in progressive politics. She once again won her primary in June 2020, all but ensuring her return to Congress for a second term after the general election in November.
