TimG Marketing Marketing and Advertising for Small Businesses

There's a section of your Google Business Profile you've probably never touched. It's now one of the most powerful things you can do for AI visibility. Takes two hours.

It's the "Questions & Answers" tab on your Google listing.

Anyone can post a question there. And here's the part almost no one uses: you can post your own questions and answer them yourself. Google allows it.

Here's why it matters right now.

When Google's AI Overview builds a service-category summary for local searches (things like "best plumber near me" or "who does same-day HVAC in Portland"), it pulls directly from the Q&A content on business profiles.

A business with 8 answered service questions gets cited in those summaries.

A business with an empty Q&A tab doesn't.

Three questions worth answering on your profile this week:

1. Do you offer same-day service?
2. What's included in a standard [inspection / consultation / estimate]?
3. Do you serve [your city] and surrounding areas?

Write the questions the way a real customer would type them into Google. Answer in 2 to 3 sentences with specifics. Include your service area, your response time, and what's actually included.

That's the whole play.

Two hours of work on a section of your listing you already own, and you become the business Google's AI can quote from when someone in your city asks a question.

If you want help figuring out which questions to answer for your specific business, drop a comment or DM. Happy to point you at the ones that move the needle for your service category.

I know. You hate Yelp. I did too.

Does not matter anymore.

Every time someone asks AI for a plumber near them, Yelp decides if it is you.

Q4 2025 numbers: Yelp received 512,680 AI citations. That is 3.4x more than the next platform.

In Google AI Mode, Yelp is 72.5% of every local citation.

For "near me" questions, Yelp beats every competitor combined by 3.3x.

Here is why it stopped being optional.

OpenAI signed a data deal with Yelp in early 2026. ChatGPT pulls local recommendations straight from Yelp reviews.

Amazon put Yelp inside Alexa+ for home services. Voice search for a plumber runs on Yelp data.

This is the structural layer of local AI search getting built in real time.

The reframe you need to hear.

Yelp is the AI citation layer sitting on top of your Google Business Profile. GBP wins you the map pack. Yelp wins you the AI answer.

You need both now.

Save this. Forward it to the business owner you know who has not touched their Yelp profile in two years. This just became urgent.

A business with 80 reviews is outranking you on Google. The reason lives in what they did last week.

Three new reviews. Maybe four.

That is the whole story.

Google now rewards velocity, meaning how many new reviews are coming in per week over the last 90 days. Total review count sits behind it as a secondary signal.

An 80-review business bringing in 3 or 4 fresh reviews a week will outrank a 400-review business that has been flat since spring. The 400 looks impressive on the profile page. The 80 is the one showing up when someone searches at 7pm on a Tuesday.

This is where stale thinking costs local businesses real revenue. The old playbook was to stack reviews, protect the number, treat it as a moat. That playbook worked in 2019, back when the ranking math cared more about totals than momentum.

The moat lives in the pace now. Momentum is doing the work the total number used to do.

Koira and Rio SEO both put review velocity at the top of the local ranking signals this year, with total review count as a supporting factor behind it.

Here is the honest part. Business owners have been operating on the old rulebook because that is the rulebook that used to work. The market shifted underneath a lot of people at the same time, and the businesses catching on first are the ones taking the local pack positions.

Now the question I want to ask you.

What is your current review velocity, roughly how many new reviews are you getting per month?

Drop a number in the comments. I am curious where the room lands.

📈 Five low-cost, trackable tactics local businesses often skip, implement them consistently to lift same-week bookings. These steps align with TimG Marketing's AI-driven, conversion-focused approach and pair naturally with our high-conversion web design services. - Make same-day availability prominent on your homepage and enable click-to-call; track clicks as conversions.
- Run a short (7-day) geo-retargeting ad to recent site visitors and measure bookings by UTM/pixel source.
- Use a one-step booking form that pre-selects common services to reduce friction and increase completion.
- Post a single local update linking to live availability and track link-to-booking conversion over 24-72 hours.
- Automate one follow-up message after an inquiry to nudge booking and log the resulting conversion source.

My GBP views dropped 22% last month. I wasn't panicking. My clients were.

Three of them called me that week. Same question every time. "What did we do wrong?"

Nothing. That's the answer.

We looked at 100 businesses we manage. Views down across the board. Calls, directions, and website clicks? Flat or up.

AI Overviews are the reason. Google now answers the search on the results page. Your name, hours, rating, reviews, all right there. The customer never has to click into your profile to get what they need.

The view doesn't register. The customer still calls.

If your phone is ringing and your directions are steady, your business is healthy. You're watching a scoreboard that changed rules on you.

Forward this to someone who's watching their GBP views and worried.

Most local business owners have a story about the agency that promised the moon and delivered a monthly invoice.

I'm not here to trash agencies.

But I do know why they fail local businesses, and it has nothing to do with effort or price.

It's architecture.

Generic agencies sell disconnected services.

Local businesses need a connected system.

Let me explain.

One agency handles your SEO.
Another runs your ads.
Someone else built your website three years ago.

Each vendor optimizes their piece, hits their metrics, sends their report.

But nobody's watching the whole journey — from the moment someone searches for you to the moment they actually become a paying customer.

So you end up with great rankings that don't convert.

Expensive ads sending people to a confusing website.

A beautiful site that nobody can find.

Leads slipping through the cracks because follow-up is still manual and you're already buried in work.

The pieces don't talk to each other, and when something breaks, everyone points at someone else.

This isn't about bad people or lazy work — most agencies are genuinely trying to help.

The problem is how the service is structured.

Most agencies are built to sell a specific solution: SEO, PPC, web design, social media, whatever.

They're really good at that one thing.

But local businesses don't need one thing.

They need visibility, trust, conversion, follow-up, and measurement working together as a system that actually makes sense.

When I talk to business owners, they describe the same frustration:

"We've tried three different agencies. They all said they could help. We spent thousands. Nothing stuck."

The problem wasn't the tactics.

It was that nobody diagnosed the actual system, nobody asked where customers were slipping away in the journey.

They just sold what they sell.

So here's what to look for when you're evaluating any vendor:

→ Do they start by diagnosing your entire customer acquisition journey, or do they lead with their solution?

→ Do they explain how their work connects to everything else, or do they only focus on their deliverable?

→ Do they measure success by your business outcomes, or by their service metrics?

If they cannot answer those questions clearly, you are buying a disconnected service, and disconnected services create scattered results.

You deserve a system where visibility leads to trust, trust leads to conversion, conversion leads to follow-up, and follow-up leads to measurable growth.

That's not harder to build.

It's just built differently.

Marketing should create clarity, not confusion.
