Why does an entire marketing team still need to hire a social media manager?
I had a conversation with a potential client around this question, and I think it’s something a lot of marketing directors are asking, while a lot of marketing teams already know the answer.
The reality is that what used to be “just create a post” has turned into, “Create a post on Facebook… AND adjust it for Instagram, LinkedIn, and Google Business Profile, turn it into a short video for TikTok, share it to Stories, post it in Facebook Groups, check the comments, make sure the link works, and somehow still answer the question, ‘Can we make this go viral?’”
Now repeat that three times a week, while also remembering that social media is usually just one item on a Marketing Manager’s task list, right alongside campaigns, events, website updates, emails, internal requests, reporting, meetings, approvals, vendors, and everything else that magically becomes “marketing.”
This is where a lot of content stops working, not because the ideas are bad or because the team doesn’t care, but because the content never actually gets posted...
or it gets posted without being optimized for each platform...
or the strategy gets pushed aside because everyone is just trying to keep up.
Sometimes analytics don’t get reviewed, so no one really knows what is working, and sometimes the “quick post” that needed to go up immediately ends up with typos, missing details, or information that should have been double-checked.
And none of that usually happens because the person managing social media is not capable. It happens because social media has become a full marketing function, not a side task.
At some point, the question should no longer be, “Why aren’t we posting more?” It should be, “What should we outsource so this actually becomes sustainable?”
Your internal team owns the big-picture strategy, approvals, internal updates, campaign priorities, and brand voice because they know the organization better than anyone else.
Outside support can help with the social media strategy, content calendar, graphics, captions, scheduling, short-form video editing, reporting, platform optimization, and community engagement so the strategy does not get buried under the daily pressure to simply get something posted.
The goal is not to hand everything off and hope for the best. The goal is to build a system that is realistic, sustainable, and actually supports the people doing the work.
Need help deciding what to outsource vs. keep in-house?
That’s a conversation worth having.
