In the nonprofit sector, a crisis doesn’t just impact reputation. It can impact trust, teams, and the mission itself.

In recognition of APR Month, my recent article shares how I approach crisis leadership, from internal alignment to external credibility, and why calm, preparedness, and listening are essential in high-stakes moments.

A crisis message does not need to be long. It needs to be real.

I’ve experienced that crisis communications is not just about what you say, it’s about how you listen and how you lead. And often, that means becoming the steady voice when the pressure is high and the path forward isn’t fully clear.

Behind the scenes, the strongest crisis communication is not reactive. It is scenario-driven. The best communicators do not improvise their way through high-risk moments. They plan for them.

You can recover from a mistake. You cannot recover easily from losing trust.
Because in a crisis, people don’t need the loudest voice. They need the steadiest one.

I’m looking forward to joining communicators from across Georgia at the PRSA Georgia Chapter Conference this Friday. I’m not only excited to speak, but also to learn and grow alongside so many talented professionals in our field.

I’ll be leading a session with the APR Committee on Accreditation in Public Relations: The Process, the Value, the Path Forward, where we’ll walk through what it takes to earn your APR and how to use it to grow as a strategic communicator.

I’ll also have the honor of presiding over the APR pinning ceremony during the opening session, where we will recognize our newest APRs.

Whether you’re considering the APR or already hold the credential, I look forward to connecting with you there.

"The question is not whether Americans can thrive with more plant-based protein. The evidence is clear that we can. The question is whether our national dietary guidance will lead the future or lag behind it."

History shows that progress is not driven solely by visible acts of protest. It is also shaped by strategy, discipline and the people working behind the scenes to move systems forward.

For Black History Month, I wrote about what Black history teaches us about representation, voice and responsibility in leadership and communications.

Leadership is not only about visibility. It is about using your platform with intention. Read here:

I’m excited to share this story in The Guardian about an Iowa farm that transitioned from industrial pig farming to mushroom cultivation. It’s a powerful example of what’s possible when farmers are supported in moving away from industrial animal agriculture.

At Mercy For Animals, through The Transfarmation Project, we work with farmers to help them shift to more sustainable, plant-focused operations. Stories like this show that alternatives to conventional systems are possible for the environment, rural communities, and the future of food. Change is not only possible, it’s already happening.

Special thanks to journalist Tom Duggins for the collaboration!

Today, I’m reflecting on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his call to lead with responsibility, courage, and action. As a communicator, my responsibility is not to soften injustice or make it easier to accept. It is to make it harder to ignore.

In honor of MLK Day, I wrote a blog inspired by his words and what they mean for my work at Mercy For Animals and my role as a communications leader: The Fierce Urgency of Now: Leading With Responsibility, Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“The question remains as urgent as ever: What are we doing for others today?”
