If you live on Kauaʻi’s North Shore, you likely already know Jöell and Gabi, owners of Wainiha Country Market, a pocket of joy tucked between two bridges.
Long before Hurricane Lowell, they were a hub for Hāʻena, sourcing locally made food and bringing the community together. In the storm’s aftermath, they adapted to meet the needs around them—donating perishables, opening their fridges to residents, and transforming the market into a relief hub for food, gas, supplies, and an internet connection.
And amid it all, the community persistently showed up—from Tyler Jeffries to Mayor Derek Kawakami delivering lunch to kūpuna and market visitors alike. I was honored to be able to spend some time documenting it all.
