Extraction Factor Calculation in Liquid–Liquid Extraction:

The extraction factor (Eₓ or E_f) is an important parameter in liquid–liquid extraction used to evaluate how effectively a solute distributes between the extract phase and the raffinate phase.

In a typical extraction process, the feed containing the desired solute is contacted with a solvent inside a mixer. After thorough mixing, the two immiscible liquid phases are separated in a settler. The solute preferentially transfers into the solvent-rich phase, producing the extract, while the remaining feed-rich phase leaves as the raffinate.

⚙️ Basic Process Flow

Feed + Solvent → Mixer → Settler → Extract + Raffinate

Feed (F): Contains the solute to be extracted.

Solvent (S): Selectively dissolves the desired solute.

Mixer: Provides intimate contact between the two liquid phases.

Settler: Allows the extract and raffinate phases to separate.

Extract (E): Solvent-rich phase containing the transferred solute.

Raffinate (R): Feed-rich phase containing the remaining solute.

📐 Extraction Factor Formula

The extraction factor shown in the infographic is:

E_f = y_E / y_R

where:

E_f = Extraction factor

y_E = Mass fraction of solute in the extract

y_R = Mass fraction of solute in the raffinate

When the phase flow rates and solute concentrations are used:

E_f = (E × x_E) / (R × x_R)

where:

E = Extract flow rate

R = Raffinate flow rate

x_E = Solute concentration in extract

x_R = Solute concentration in raffinate

🧮 Example Calculation

Given:

Extract flow rate, E = 200 kg/h

Solute concentration in extract, x_E = 0.08

Raffinate flow rate, R = 300 kg/h

Solute concentration in raffinate, x_R = 0.02

Therefore:

E_f = (200 × 0.08) / (300 × 0.02)

E_f = 16 / 6

✅ Extraction Factor = 2.667

An extraction factor greater than 1 indicates that, under the conditions represented by this calculation, the solute loading relative to the raffinate is favorable toward the extract phase.
