Summer Pet Safety

Animals feel the heat just like humans and need protection from the sun and other risks.

If the asphalt is too hot for you to walk on, then it is too hot for your dog. Take dogs for walks early in the morning or late in the day.

Dogs and cats can dehydrate and suffer heatstroke so limit time outdoors. If you cannot keep a dog or cat inside—cats should always be inside so they don’t fall prey to predators—try freezing a stainless pet bowl filled with water. The water will melt slowly as it provides a cool drink.

Dogs can suffer sunburn. Be sure to apply a pet-safe sunscreen to protect them. Pets with light skin and a short or thin hair coat are particularly prone to sunburn or skin cancer.

The heat also brings out snakes, so if you walk on a trail keep your dog close and listen for rattles.

Remind guests to close doors. Many dogs and cats go missing because someone accidentally leaves the door open to run out to the pool or play in the street with friends.

Never leave pets alone in a hot car.

Grass and plants can be home to ticks, fleas and bees. But treating with pesticides can also be hazardous to your pet. Keep pets safe by checking for pests and reserving a fertilizer-free, pesticide-free shaded area in your yard for them.

Brush your pets often. This will remove excess fur they shed in summer and help keep them cooler.

Keep a pet first-aid kit handy. Dogs and cats can get cuts and insect bites, too. Many pet stores sell them. Pet CPR is very different from human CPR, and the Red Cross offers courses that teach CPR to pet guardians.

Keep pets away from the grill. That hamburger smells so good, but they may feel the heat. They are just kids with fur.

The Little Angels Project Pet Food Pantry load for rescues, sanctuaries, food Pantries, Homeless Services is now sorted. Contact me to schedule a time to purchase and pickup.

The Little Angels Project Pet Food Pantry is a trial project meant to assist rescues, sanctuaries, feral cat feeders, street dog feeders, low income, homeless and veterans.

We pay the shipping and handling cost to get product that is in a pet distribution warehouse that includes warehouse damaged bags / dented cans. etc.

If the company opens a case and the box cutter nicks the bag, it cannot be sold to the general public. If they drop a bag and a seam opens, they cannot sell to the general public. If they drop the case of cans and they are dented or any product leaks - it cannot be sold to the general public. We are being given the opportunity to re-home the product in a secondary market for which we have shown there is a need.

There are a variety of mostly high quality and premium brands and loads come in assorted so we cannot go through and pick out specific bags / cans for you.

Products are generally not expired and have from a month to 24 months shelf life on them.

Pricing is set at $.15 lb to cover our transportation cost and handling. That means a 20 lb bag of premium food costs $3 per bag $6 for 40 lb.

How the program works is Rescue Bank gets notification from a manufacturer or pet store chain of truckloads of food, supplies, litter and toys available and it is shipped to a Bank location for discount sale and distribution. It must go to non-profits not sold to other stores or EBAY.

The sponsor (LAP) organization pays shipping in. Then reimburses that expense as well as fuel for forklifts or other operating costs and the rest is donated to the 501 c 3 operating the bank.

All rescues or pantries that participate must provide proof of non-profit status in good standing.

Who or what inspired you to get into the pet industry?

I am one of those fortunate people that always knew what I wanted to do. As a child, I would catch lizards and keep them as pets, I would tell my twin sister I wanted to work with animals. It has always been my passion. I became a Registered Vet Tech, I have taught and started unique veterinary practices that address the needs of low cost spay / neuter for cats, or affordable care for those that are disadvantaged, homeless, or elderly to give back to my community and fill a gap in pet care.

What do you feel is your biggest contribution to the pet business and/or pet parents?

Biggest contribution is ability to find solutions to problems. Such as helping low income, homeless and disaster victims having the inability to pay a vet bill.

In my Veterinary Angels Medical Center Practice, I have specialist that see species that other vets are not used to seeing. So, when we respond to a disaster, we do not have turn away a donkey, rabbit, swan, or pig.

The Little Angels Project, my non-profit animal assistance organization, has responded to fires and an earthquake and has taken care of animals that were injured as a result of disaster at zero cost to the owners.

The VEMA idea stems from responding to those local disasters and the folks who show up at an evacuation center and having taken nothing for their pets including vet records that may prevent them from being allowed into the shelter. I wanted to be sure that pet owners were prepared with their own “go bag” and education.

During the disaster relief recovery, we learned how many people were not prepared and how to prepare and had no idea of what supplies to take. I have put together a product that pet owners can have confidence in that it is safe for their beloved pet.

What issues do you think need more attention from the pet industry and why?

We need to provide more education from the pet industry. Pet owners need to know more about the animals they are adopting – how long they live, how to handle emergencies, what resources are available to them to decide about selecting a pet that is right for them and the proper care for that animals We are educating people in pet care not just products so they have solutions for their pets to fill the gap.

As to pet care the public needs to understand that products need to be animal specific not just use people products. In a disaster, they need to be ready to help their pets if first responders cannot get there in time. They need to arm themselves with knowledge and become a valuable part of the pet industry team. There also needs to be education about what the animal will require over time – food / products for aging. Will it require medications and how to get them.

What are the most important attributes of a strong leader?

Willingness to be flexible, understand, listen, and ability to not be afraid to forge a new path regardless of who follows.

2021 Lifetime Achievement Award: NINA LEIGH KRUEGER Nina Leigh Krueger has spent the majority of her career in the animal and pet care industry, culminating on January 1, when she became the CEO and President of Nestlé Purina PetCare for the Americas. Krueger is not only the eighth CEO in company h...
