Two of the biggest films of the year, Barbie and Super Mario Bros., are based on old IP, one a major toy brand and the other a seminal video game series.

Franchises like Fast & Furious, Marvel, and Mission Impossible are still cranking out new movies, they aren’t seeing the box office or critical success they once did.

With the union strikes in Hollywood, and the ever-evolving streaming market, big Hollywood studios have a tough road ahead.

A faith-based movie and a three-hour biopic are outperforming sequels to some of the most beloved characters on earth.

As major media and tech companies like HBO Max and Twitter have recently rebranded, there may be some challenges with new brand recognition for some consumers.

Twitter is rebranding as X. The new X logo replaced the famous blue bird over the weekend.

Twitter’s new CEO Linda Yaccarino explained that “X is the future state of unlimited interactivity — centered in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking — creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services and opportunities.”

This major rebrand announcement comes just weeks after Meta’s twitter competitor Threads launched and gained millions users.

The number of films released by major studios grew from 563 in 2012 to well over 800 in 2019, while the number of indie films released stayed the same at around 140 per year.

The entire film industry cut back or delayed releases during the pandemic, with studios only releasing 291 films in 2020.

As the strikes in Hollywood have severely interrupted productions, film releases will likely be delayed, meaning less films will be released over the next few years.

Wix recently announced a new AI Site Generator powered by ChatGPT, that will allow users to simply enter a detailed prompt to build a new website.

AI Site Generator can build in ecommerce, scheduling, food ordering and event ticketing components automatically, giving users a high degree of utility.

Wix is launching a new generative AI tool that can create websites, complete with images, from a text prompt.

One of the major points of contention with the writer’s and actor’s strike in Hollywood is compensation and residuals from streamer’s.

Many of the major players in streaming are not yet profitable, and are in fact billions of dollars in the red.

Netflix however earned over $5 billion in profits in 2022.
While streamers are a multi-billion dollar industry, if streamers are not profitable, it may be hard for them to give up more of the pie that the actor’s and writer’s unions are demanding.

Hollywood is essentially at a standstill as actors from SAG-AFTRA have also decided to go on strike alongside writers from the WGA.

As the unions fight with networks and studios over things like AI and streaming royalties, many productions are on hold until the strike is over.

Movies whose productions have halted include Beetlejuice 2, a live action version of Lilo & Stitch, and the Minecraft movie.

Amazon Prime’s subscription numbers have steadily increased over the last few years.

The ecommerce and streaming service has grown from 126 million subscribers in 2019, to over 175 million in 2023. That means over 65% of the US population has an Amazon Prime account.

All those subscribers have lead to huge sales numbers for Prime Day, over $12 billion last year!
