The township leaders of Tabernacle Township have offered preliminary indications that they are in favor of prohibiting data centers in the municipality.

Township Solicitor Tom Coleman, however, maintained that as of now, in the absence of any local ordinance, any applicant would have to go through the Pinelands Commission, given its jurisdiction over Tabernacle.

He said preliminary comments offered by the Pinelands Commission “in loose discussions” on the topic is that data center approvals “in certain Pinelands towns” is “very improbable given the resources that these facilities consume.”

Officials with Evesham Township gathered with local families last month to celebrate a major milestone in the community with the grand opening of the new “Completely Inclusive Playground” at Evesboro Downs Park.

This 12,000-square-foot project was specially crafted to accommodate the physical, sensory and social needs of those experiencing disabilities, with the finished project marking a transformative leap forward for accessible play in Evesham Township, township officials maintained in a press release.

The playground, which made its official debut on Aug. 6, was made possible with the support of a $731,000 grant awarded under the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP)’s Green Acres Funding program, township officials pointed out.

Flamingo Lake, which residents of the Marlton Lakes community in Evesham Township use for swimming but was temporarily closed following an accidental spill of hydraulic fluid from excavating machinery on Aug. 7 during a stormwater pipe repair, has since been reopened after an extensive evaluation by local, county and state officials and “at the discretion of the Marlton Lakes Civic Association,” according to a letter sent out several days later to local residents by Township Manager Walt Miller.

One of two Lenape Regional High School District Board of Education members representing Medford Township, Amanda Fitchett, was said to have resigned from the board in remarks delivered by Board President Samuel B. Green during the regular meeting Aug. 26.

Green spoke about Fitchett’s resignation following the board’s executive session.

“Our Medford Township representative, Amanda Fitchett, submitted her letter of resignation, effective June 26, leaving the remainder of this calendar year’s term to be filled by board appointment,” said Green, adding, “The remaining two years will be determined in the November election.”

The Pemberton Rotary Club gave a donation of $19,967 to the Pemberton Township Board of Education to purchase “four fully-equipped workstations in the Pemberton Township High School automotive shop” in honor of former board member Raymond R. Wells, a lifelong Pemberton resident who died last year.

Rotarian Perry Doyle Sr. presented the donation on behalf of the Rotary Club at the Aug. 27 board of education meeting, accompanied by Wells’ daughter, Karen Pringle, and granddaughter, Shannon O’Brien.

“I have the pleasure to offer a donation to the Pemberton Township High School Board of Education in honor of Ray Wells,” Doyle said. “Ray Wells was a lifetime resident of Pemberton—played sports here, was involved in everything in the community, and was a member of the Rotary Club for 41 years.”

Several Pemberton Township officials approached this newspaper on a condition of anonymity within the past few weeks to report that the municipality was recently the victim of a “phishing scam,” in which a $195,660 payment intended for Command Co., Inc. was unknowingly at the time redirected to a scammer.

Those that approached this newspaper alleged that there was a delayed notification to some of the most senior township officials about what had happened, with it also being alleged to this newspaper that proper protocols may not have been followed initially in notifying the appropriate law enforcement officials.

They also maintained that the township had not publicly disclosed it fell victim to the scam nearly three months after it first happened because the events that transpired are “under active investigation.”
