Woodland Mayor William “Billy” DeGroff announced during a May 27 Woodland Township Committee meeting that the governing body is appointing current municipal Emergency Management Coordinator and Deputy Fire Chief Christopher Stopero as interim fire chief (there was some confusion about the start date, and attempts to clarify this with the township’s public information officer were unsuccessful as of deadline time, but the mayor appeared to be corrected that it will start July 1).

“When it is going to happen, we are going to put out a job listing (seeking) anyone who is interested in (being) a fire chief,” DeGroff added.

The mayor added that the township committee, to include him, will then “choose a new fire chief and possibly a deputy chief also.”

Imagine a return to the good old days of internal medicine in which a physician got to know you more deeply, had more time to spend with you than what has become the average 15-minute appointment, and offered unhurried blocks of time to discuss your medical history and goals, then partnered with you on a plan for proactive, preventive care.

You won’t have to dream about the return of individualized medical care anymore if you reside in the Medford area, as James J. Holton, MD, a widely respected physician of three decades in the community, is answering a growing community need, coming out of retirement and opening a membership-based medical practice in Medford that is affiliated with MDVIP.

A prior decision to push back the opening time of the Woodland Township Transfer Station on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., starting June 1, so that it could be open later in the evening until 6 p.m. (versus 4 p.m.) has been officially rescinded.

“We are going to rescind the dump hours,” declared Mayor William “Billy” DeGroff on May 27. “You can all blame me – I said maybe we will talk about it, maybe some people will like it, but I learned one thing: after two times (the other being in 2014 when the township unsuccessfully attempted to start trash pickup in town), never mention that word ‘dump’ or ‘transfer station’ in this town! You want to get people to (come to) a meeting – just say the words ‘transfer station!’”

Along with unanimously passing a $48,718,714 municipal budget resolution and an ordinance setting rules and fees for pickleball (the latter covered in the May 23 edition of the Pine Barrens Tribune), the Evesham Township Council at its May 6 meeting introduced proposed ordinances that would designate all trails within the township for “non-motorized traffic only” and would permit the hunting of deer in certain locations with bows and arrows in order to better manage what was characterized as an out-of-control population of the animals.

Public hearings on both measures are scheduled for the next regular council meeting on June 10.

The council also unanimously adopted an ordinance on second reading that authorized the acceptance of a 13.74-acre tract of undeveloped land at 1969 Dutch Road from the estate of Harriet Lynn Tractman as open space for active or passive recreational purposes, subject to “further due diligence.”
