Is there a place for retro logos? We think so.
But this was never just a logo. Oceanfront Snowboards was a standalone shop run by Ski World on Norfolk Avenue, right at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. When snowboarding took off, it got its own dedicated storefront down in the resort area, just for boards and gear. That location eventually closed and folded back into the main Ski World store, but the original wood sign still hangs above the entrance to the snowboard department. That's what the shop wanted to bring back. Not a design. A memory.
When a client asks us to revive something like that, we look for three things:
1. Real heritage. The original wood sign still hangs in the shop. This isn't a retro-style redesign. It's the actual old mark, brought back to life.
2. Living memory. Someone was spotted wearing a sweatshirt with the original on it, and the comments rolled in. No campaign, no push. People just remembered.
3. A moment. Ski World is 49 years in and closing in on 50. Bringing the old mark back as the anniversary approaches isn't nostalgia, it's timing.
When those three line up, a retro logo isn't looking backward. It's a shortcut to trust.
