❤️ Survival Story: A Life Saved in the LC Valley
On April 12th, 2025, Russ Howell and his significant other traveled from Florida to the LC Valley to begin one of the region’s iconic river cruises. They were staying at the Holiday Inn and were moments away from boarding the ship when the unexpected happened.
Off-duty Clarkston Firefighter/Paramedic Max Bausch and his wife had just entered the hotel lobby to attend a family friend’s funeral when Bausch noticed a medical emergency unfolding. A man later identified as Mr. Howell was lying on the lobby floor, unconscious and unresponsive.
Without hesitation, Bausch quickly assessed the patient, found no pulse, and immediately began CPR. A Clarkston Police Department officer, already on site for an unrelated matter, radioed dispatch at Bausch’s direction to request Clarkston Medics
For the next 90 seconds, Bausch continued high-quality CPR until Clarkston Fire units arrived. The patient was found to be in a shockable rhythm, thanks to the early recognition and immediate initiation of CPR. Defibrillation was performed, and after one additional round of CPR, Mr. Howell regained a pulse.
He was transported by Clarkston Medics to the regional cardiac hospital, where it was determined he had suffered a heart attack. Mr. Howell received a stent and remained hospitalized for approximately one week before being discharged well enough to fly home to Florida.
💌 A Letter of Gratitude
Several weeks later, FF/Paramedic Bausch received a heartfelt letter from Mr. Howell, thanking him for saving his life. After months of cardiac rehabilitation and physical therapy, he reported feeling “back to normal” and able to enjoy daily life again. He also shared that he would be returning to the LC Valley to finish the river cruise he never got to take and asked if he could meet the responders who helped save him.
On November 7th, Mr. Howell and his significant other reunited with FF/Paramedic Bausch and FF/Paramedic Holm for dinner, conversation, and a meaningful moment of closure. It is rare in our line of work to see the long-term outcomes of the people we help making reunions like this truly special.
🚑 Early CPR & Early Defibrillation Save Lives
Mr. Howell’s survival is the direct result of:
• Immediate bystander CPR
• Rapid activation of 911
• Early defibrillation
• Highly trained, professional responders arriving quickly
This was a chain of survival executed exactly as it should be and it made all the difference.
🏛️ The Importance of Local Fire & EMS Staffing
Stories like this show why a fully staffed, fully resourced fire department is essential for our community. Seconds matter. Trained responders matter. And Clarkston deserves the continued ability to deliver this level of lifesaving service every day.
We urge City leadership to prioritize sustainable funding to ensure these critical services remain available for all who live in and visit Clarkston.
🙏 A Final Thank You
We’d like to sincerely thank Mr. Howell for allowing us to share his story. His willingness to do so helps highlight the importance of early CPR, rapid response, and strong local emergency services.
