● maturing in 10 years or more have slumped 46% since peaking in March 2020, according to data compiled by . That’s just shy of the 49% plunge in US in the aftermath of the dot-com bust at the turn of the century.

● The extent of the losses is a stark reminder of the risk that comes with piling into longer-dated bonds, where prices are the most sensitive to changes in interest rates. That was part of the appeal of the securities as the Federal Reserve spent the better part of a decade cutting borrowing costs to near zero.

● But as the central has carried out the most aggressive monetary-policy tightening in decades to rein in runaway inflation, the mix of historically low starting yields, long-maturity debt and rapidly rising rates has proven to be a painful combination.

● Consider two assertions about the much-maligned industry. First: Only 1 in 3 active managers can beat a nearly free fund tracking the &P500. Second: Active managers taken together possess discernible skill.

● According to Hendrik Bessembinder, the Arizona State University professor whose research has upended much accepted wisdom about investing, both are true.

● How that can be so goes back to the paper that’s made him an academic lightning rod in one of the most fraught debates on Wall Street. To him, the case against active has nothing to do with the world’s best-paid professional investors being the equivalent of dart-throwing monkeys or pawing cats.

● Rather, the thing that condemns the vast majority of pickers to futility is the market’s own obscure math. It’s a statistical concept known as skewness—on vivid display this year.

The quokka, an Australian marsupial about the size of a domestic cat, has been dubbed the happiest animal on Earth. Yet these days it has competition from another species: the American stock investor.

The VIX is an index that measures expected volatility in stock prices, using the cost of insuring against extreme moves. This year it has fallen by more than half. Considering that it is sometimes referred to as the “fear gauge”, its low level suggests a quokka-like placidity in the stockmarket.

The decline of the VIX stands in stark contrast to its equivalent in the Treasury market. Although the MOVE index, which tracks the price of insuring against bond-market volatility, has declined from a 13-year high in March, it is still twice as high as it was pre-covid.

Bond investors could be considered the porcupines of the financial world—wary and naturally defensive—and they remain far from convinced that the good times have returned.

But what does that mean for investing? Are bots going to devour money managers’ business and livelihoods?

On this week’s Crash Course podcast, host Tim O’Brien joins two successful investors to talk all things AI, money and disruption.
