"Before the Nationals there was Sammy Sternburg" - a short story by Fred Sternburg written October 25, 2019

Back in the early '90s, while I was still living and working in my beloved Washington, D.C., Charlie Brotman and I were doing the public relations for the latest incarnation of the "Bring Baseball Back to Washington" campaign. And while the campaign attracted a record-number of season ticket account deposits, MLB ignored the city's plea.
One of the best things to come out of that campaign was the attached print ad, which we designed, featuring Sammy Sternburg. It ran in Washington Post and The Washington Times and was a huge hit. Sam, now 29, has since added six feet to his frame (he gets his height from me), earned degrees in Microbiology and Finance, and is the proud father of a rescued three-legged Jack Russell Terrier named Jasper. The one thing Sam, the Washington Nationals and Baseball in Washington have in common is that their time has come.
Tonight, we will be watching Washington's first World Series game since 1933 from our home in Denver, with Sammy's ad proudly displayed atop the ol' Philco, rooting like hell for the Nationals.

Congratulations to the Washington Nationals as they continue to lead the World Series 2019. Interesting to hear about how they came back to DC.

Mark Tuohey has been a key player in most visible trials in local politics past 30 years and one of the people responsible for bringing baseball back to DC.
