Late last year I drove up to the Baltimore City Public Schools building to photograph the extraordinary LaQuisha Hall. An author and one-time BCPS Teacher of the Year, this force of nature set her sights on not just getting students to enjoy reading, but successfully helping them to actually write and publish their own stories. As she explained to in , "What I proposed to them was, what if you could tell your story in a way that could be permanent and passed down generations? They lit up at the idea of doing that. I said, 'There are people who want to know about your life. Who want to know what you learned. You have a voice and a value.'” Their stories culminated in a powerful published anthology called One Nation, One Heart. All of this is in addition to the work she does in areas of women's and youth empowerment, and fighting against sexual abuse and domestic violence. Please check out the original interview at https://t.co/rloMmuCr8g, learn more about LaQuisha at http://laquishahall.com, and check out One Nation, One Heart on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1533119236/.

I kicked off 2021 with a great shoot at my studio, another opportunity to work with Wordsmith, helping to update some of his publicity photos. The great thing about working with another artist is the satisfying feeling of collaboration. I also love any excuse to get back into the studio after doing so much location work. If shooting on location is free-verse poetry, then studio work is like a sonnet; you really have to flex to achieve your creative goals within the strictures of this delineated space. Find out more about Wordsmith (and hear his great music) at https://wordsmithmusic.com, and read about his artistic partnership with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra () in the interview with in at https://t.co/CvrqRNLohJ.

So next week my daughter's school reopens for in-person learning, following a hybrid schedule. Personally I'm torn on sending her back. On the one hand she's really thrived working from home, even while splitting her time one week at my place, and the next at her mom's. On the other hand, my heart aches for all the 5th grade experiences she's missing out on: finally being atop the elementary school food chain; the wonderful 5th grade customs and traditions at her school; the personal connections with her friends and teachers. Her mom and I have discussed it and we've relented to her wishes to go back. We put our trust in the school to keep her safe, to follow guidelines, to teach her in the best way possible. It's been a journey getting a front seat view of her schooling for almost a full year, and having a virtual classroom full of kids amplified through your house as you try to talk on the phone, write emails, read contracts, and hold your own Zoom meetings... I envy a little the Gill-Harvey family, who I photographed back in September; they had the wonderful idea of converting their detached garage into a mini-schoolhouse for their three kids. This may look like a staged photo (and to be fair, I did set up lights all over the place to do this), but those kids were in the middle of their schoolday while this photo shoot went on. Each one with headsets, laptops, and their impressive concentration. I did get to answer several smart and curious questions during their breaks, leading me to believe they've been learning just fine in this new "school" environment. Please be sure to read all about it in "Homeschool Confidential" by in at https://t.co/kf8zognXCI.

On a brisk November day, just a month-and-a-half before this beautiful building was tragically desecrated, Congressman Kweisi Mfume made time between votes on the House Floor to meet me out on the steps of the nation's Capitol. This was actually my third location for this shoot; after wrangling permits for one spot and learning he wouldn't be able to make it there with his limited availability, then dragging my gear to a second spot closer to his office in the Rayburn Building, and finally walking right up to the steps of the Capitol, to a spot where photography typically isn't permitted. I thought for sure we'd be turned away and the whole thing would fall apart. But, as if on cue, the congressman came down to meet us, a Capitol policeman said if you're with him you can carry on, his communications director graciously held up the one light I'd carried there, and I got off as many portraits as I could in less than five minutes. Lest you think the congressman was making my job difficult, no - I'm grateful he gave me these precious free moments while serving his constituents and the nation, stepping out there to meet me between votes for this portrait. And if I'm being totally honest, this was a far better location than the first two I'd staked out. I understand there are some big things underway at the Capitol this week, and I know Rep. Mfume is there again, casting his votes and lending his powerful voice to the defense of our democracy. Please be sure to read the interview with in at https://t.co/V3KDr9MOaV.

Hey everyone, it's been a minute. I hope this finds you doing well. I have a few images shot over the last couple of months I'd like to share, starting off with this portrait of Wordsmith that I made back in October in front of the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. is more than a rapper: he's a songwriter, performer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, and he's now an official Artistic Partner of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Doing a shot in mid-day sun in front of a darkly colored building is usually a nightmare scenario for a photographer, but I decided I'd go for a different angle than I'm used to seeing, getting the sun grazing the side of the building by crossing the street and setting up on a corner in front of a parking garage. As my key light I used a beauty dish on a boom so I could blast enough light to match the sunshine, and then used a smaller octabox for my fill light. I'm really happy about the results, which were helped not a little bit by Wordsmith's total comfort in front of the camera - he gave me some great poses, of which this one was my favorite. I’ve been off social media for quite a spell (and I will be back soon), but I had to break the silence because I am so stoked that one of my portraits has won first-place in the editorial category of the 2020 Photo/Video Contest. For those not in the industry, ASMP is the American Society of Media Photographers, a trade organization I have been a proud member of for over twenty years. To have an honor like this come out of a year like 2020 is a pretty good feeling. I posted this portrait here a few months ago along with other images from the same shoot, and after getting more than a few nice comments about this one shot in particular I figured I’d go ahead and submit it to the contest. So, thank you to everyone who helped encourage my work and made this prize possible. Make sure you head over to and check out the excellent work of my fellow awardees, it’s an honor to be included among them.

In September I had the pleasure of photographing Julia Sircar, newly transplanted to DC having just graduated from the University of Southern California (I'm spelling that out since my east coast friends seem to think USC is located somewhere in South Carolina...), on the occasion of her recognition as one of "33 Under 33" top trailblazers and change-makers by the Trident, the official magazine of Tri Delta sorority. Before graduating with her degree in industrial & systems engineering, Julia was selected to work with the National Academy of Engineering to help find engineering solutions for COVID-19, including how to scale up production of PPE, ventilators, and testing. I have to say, meeting smart young people like her really gives me hope for our future. Read more about all of Tri Delta's remarkable "33 Under 33" honorees online at https://bit.ly/36QuwVs, and learn more about Julia Sircar's undergraduate work at https://bit.ly/38WTEMQ. Thanks to art director for a great assignment!
