DC office manager Latrese Campbell got the office off its butt during September by organizing a STEPtember fitness challenge encouraging everyone to walk 10,000 steps per day during the work week. Why 10,000 steps? What’s the benefit? Where did this come from? According to USA TODAY, “ten thousand steps was first popularized by Japanese pedometers in the 1960s under the name 'manpo-kei,' which means '10,000 steps meter,'” Some research has shown that walking 10,000 steps daily, coupled with other healthy behaviors, can lead to a decrease in chronic illnesses.
Latrese organized teams of two from different disciplines within the office and a friendly rivalry ensued. The top three teams walked a combined 1,493,176 steps, which is an average of 12,443 daily per person during the work week. Big thanks to Latrese for getting us jump started! Office managing partner Jason Smith says, “Latrese really motivated us to get moving and stay moving! She brings such a positive sprit to her work on our behalf. I hope this will be the start of an ongoing DC office program.”
DC plans on a second Step Challenge in January to walk off those holiday pounds. Perhaps this becomes a 14 office, 3 continent competition in the making? Gauntlet thrown!
