For years, Clear has been the fast lane through airport security—an extra layer of insurance for making your flight. TSA has often been a crapshoot, risking pileups as travelers pulled laptops from carry-ons and novice vacationers struggled to untie their sneakers.

Clear aims to get faster too, recently introducing a new biometric scanning system that saves travelers a step. It opens directly to the spot with the baggage belt, rather than requiring an additional stop where a TSA officer checks IDs.

Recently, though, TSA has taken steps to move those snaking lines more quickly. Travelers no longer have to slip off their shoes, and the agency has expanded its own facial recognition technology. Some travelers say the improvements give Clear tougher competition.

Clear Plus membership costs $209 annually for an individual and $125 for each additional family member. The company reported there were 7.6 million active Clear Plus members in June, up from about 7.1 million the year before.

As the cost has climbed over the years, there are signs that some Clear customers are reassessing the service. Annual usage rates fell 5% over the 12 months ended June 30, Clear has said, while the number of passengers screened by TSA rose 1.4%. The share of members who stick with Clear rather than canceling has declined for the past two years.

For years, most companies favored Seattle over surrounding suburban locations. But today, tech firms are increasingly opting for Bellevue, Wash., with its modern architecture, highly rated schools and luxury boutique stores.

Crime and other quality-of-life issues, meanwhile, are causing more companies to move or stay away from Seattle’s downtown, where vacancy of top-quality office space is at a near-record 34.6%.

Since 2021, Bellevue has added close to 3.9 million square feet of office space, compared with 2.6 million square feet in downtown Seattle, according to real-estate firm Cushman & Wakefield. Bellevue is attracting big names such as TikTok, Robinhood and OpenAI.

Amazon’s workforce in Bellevue has swelled to more than 14,000 from nearly nothing a decade ago. The company projects its Bellevue workforce will climb to 25,000 in the coming years.

Seattle’s glory days of economic expansion have ended, said Peter Steinbrueck, an architect and former member of the Seattle City Council. “The pendulum has swung to the east side,” to Bellevue.

Tesla has long promised a cheaper model. On Tuesday, the company unveiled stripped down versions of its bestselling SUV and sedan, but the new lower prices don’t quite cover the recently expired $7,500 EV tax credit.

The federal government’s $35.6 million investment for a 10% stake in a small Vancouver-based mining business produced a windfall for its investors, one of whom Donald Trump is already very familiar with.

Billionaire John Paulson owned an 8.7% stake in Trilogy Metals as of the end of June. The stock tripled in after-hours trading Monday night after the deal was announced and opened 245% higher Tuesday, pushing the value of Paulson’s shares from $30 million to $100 million.

Coinciding with the investment, the White House provided authorization for a 211-mile access road to Alaska’s remote Ambler mining district.
