December 1 marks World AIDS Day. AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) has consistently advocated for change and implemented communications strategies to drive change.

Starting in the 1980s, ACT UP was a leader in the fight to end the AIDS crisis. GSR’s, Savanna Christy took a retrospective look at the activist organization and their strategic communications approach to AIDS activism.

Shifting the public perceptions of the virus was not done overnight. Ongoing communications campaigns and protests caught the attention of the media, medical authorities & the U.S. Government to achieve their goals and inform future campaigns. The commitment to consistent communication was key to driving change.
