Q: What’s your day-to-day?
A: Companies want to communicate with their employees, customers, investors, and communities every day, but they need help to connect in an authentic way. I help them tell their story – why they were founded, what they do and who are the people doing it – and most importantly, why it matters.

Q: Favorite part of working at REQ?
A: I get a total rush from the diversity of both the clients and the perspectives I am exposed to. I’ve worked with hundreds of companies over my career, at all stages of maturity and in dozens of verticals with totally different approaches. It’s never monotonous and my knowledge grows every day.

Q: Any pets?
A: 3! A 13-year old Beagle, Maisie, who never stop sniffing the ground. An 8-year-old black and white cat, Rocket, who goes on walks with us, comes when he’s called and rings a bell to go out. And, our newest Beagle is two-year old Pickles, who is learning how to dog.

Q: What do you think the most important trait for someone in your role/industry is? (Outgoing, focused, etc.)
A: Empathy. Putting users and target audiences before any personal artistic ambitions. I think an experienced designer should know when to be humble. It’ll make them a better listener, a sharper observer, and an overall more adaptive creative.

Q: (If applicable) What is a project you’ve enjoyed working on? Why?
A: I’m always nourished by brand identity projects. There’s a unique level of dedication. Learning a little more about an unfamiliar industry. Empathizing with different demographics. Maneuvering beyond trends. All these things make the pride of seeing our work out in the world much more fulfilling. (Short answer: I like seeing logos on tote bags.)

Q: Do you have any special/hidden talents?
A: I play several instruments, but I’ve been drumming since I was 16. After my phase of high school emo bands and youth group concerts, I actually haven’t owned a kit since 2009. So, I like to rent out local studios from time to time and just have hours of judgment-free fun.

Q: Favorite part of working at REQ?
A: Always the people – both at REQ and our clients! We work on tons of campaigns that have compelling causes, but it’s the people behind them–their personalities, inside jokes, personal interests, different collaboration styles–that really shape so much of your day.

Q: Any hidden talents?
A: Throughout college, I was part of an aerial silks group! I signed up on a whim, with no prior experience, but absolutely fell in love with it. DC doesn’t seem to have any practice studios though, so trapeze may be my next challenge to continue the circus skills trend.

Q: Favorite travel destination?
A: I have family friends that run a surf camp in Nosara, Costa Rica, where my dad has been going at least once a year for well over 20 years now. It’s a total surfer & yogi town. Waking up for a good sunrise paddle session is my favorite way to recharge.

Q: What’s one of your favorite client programs you’ve worked on?
A: One of my favorites projects has been creating the Road Trip Series for Golden Gate Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Every piece is a fun research project to virtually drive the route from a different city to Las Vegas, finding the best pit stops along the way.

Q: Favorite office snack?
A: My office guilty pleasure is frozen Uncrustables. Extra tasty when you put them in the toaster - warm and crispy on the outside, cold and hard peanut butter on the inside with a little bit of melty jelly!

Q: Best advice you’ve received?
A: From one of my grandma's favorite songs, “Que será, será. Whatever will be, will be.” It’s easy to get caught up in life, but when you remember that the future’s not ours to see, living in and enjoying the moment feels more important than ever.

Kenny Rufino
EVP & Creative Director

Q: What do you as REQ's Creative Director?
A: Be an effective and reliable leader to our designers. Give them the right inspiration and guidance. Get the hell out of their way.

Q: What characteristic do you value the most in your coworkers?
A: There’s a high level of talent and knowledge across our agency but I’ve come to really value the human qualities the most. Respect, teamwork, kindness—those are just a handful of traits that good people have and working with good people makes all the difference in the world.

Q: What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
A: There’s inspiration everywhere and you just have to look.

Q: Any inspirations?
A: My parents. It’s a sentimental answer perhaps but as I’ve gotten older, I can recognize now and value much more how they each influenced different parts of me.

Q: What authors are you reading?
A: I’m a big, big fan of Mieko Kawakami right now. Her writing is raw and fearless and just incredibly honest and real. Highly recommend any of her books.

Q: What do you value most in your coworkers?
A: The characteristic I value most in my coworkers is personability. The workplace can often be tumultuous and difficult-to-navigate, but we strive to and have hired individuals with high EQ, which goes a long way in collaborating on clients and developing professional and personal relationships.

Q: What’s one of your favorite clients to work on?
A: I’ve truly enjoyed working on the Human Rights Campaign account for Amazon advertising. The client is a joy to work with and trusts that we’re constantly trying to push their message and initiative forward.

Q: Are you involved in anything outside of the office?
A: I’m an assistant coach of a varsity men’s soccer team at a local high school, going into my 3rd season.
