Will you be the student who, after taking my Zoom course, signs a five-figure book contract with Simon & Schuster? If so, you won’t be the first. Here’s the story.
An Albany-based psychologist, Dr. Alan Shapiro, took “No Excuses! Writing & Selling Your Book” and then registered for the free, one-on-one book coaching session I offer as a bonus component. During the coaching session, he asked for feedback about a book idea that blended his mental-health expertise with his love of golf.
“All golfers are crazy,” Alan told me. He then explained that he had identified six major golf personalities, such as the worrier, the control freak, and the perfectionist. He had even developed an extensive psychological instrument to identify the crazy golfer’s personality type. The book he wanted to write was intended for psychologists and psychiatrists.
“Alan, you’re missing your main audience,” I told him. “Your ideal reader is the crazy golfer.”
That was his light-bulb moment. He changed the book’s concept from scholarly for mental health professionals to self-help for amateur and professional golfers.
Using the knowledge he gained in “No Excuses! Writing & Selling Your Book,” he wrote a compelling query letter and book proposal.
The first publisher to receive his pitch – Simon & Schuster – offered him a contract with a five-figure advance and published his book: Golf’s Mental Hazards: Overcome Them and Put an End to Self-Destructive Rounds.
Alan’s book debuted in 1996 and has been a steady seller ever since. More recently, his book was adopted by the Professional Golf Association for use in the organization’s mental skills training for professional golfers.
Now it’s YOUR turn. Start, write and publish with confidence – no excuses!
