Always make time to shoot photos. I got busy and didn't make time to take a good photo of this herd sire, Parker Comrade 6118. This afternoon, 6118 passed away. He was a home raised son of Select Sires angus bull Connealy Comrade 1385 out of a daughter of GAR Daylight. He was a "spread bull" with a light birthweight EPD combined with excellent weaning and yearling EPDs, and a gentle disposition. A son topped our bull sales in 2020. RIP Parker Comrade 6118, 3/20/16-7/24/21.

Here we go again! The second snow storm hits Tuesday afternoon around 4:00 pm. Eddie putting out hay for the registered bred angus heifers.

These yearling heifers were excited to see Eddie today and seemed to be handling the snow and cold well. They are a set of registered angus heifers, a few commercial angus and some 1/2 angus, 1/2 charolais heifers. They will be bred sometime in May 2021.

This photo was taken Sunday, Feb. 14, day 7 of the Arctic Blast and the beginning of snow storm #1, and just hours before the snow got heavy. I was checking these bred heifers which genetically are 1/2 angus, 1/2 corriente and were bred to one of our angus bulls. The calf in the foreground was born Feb. 7th signaling the beginning of our calving season, and just one day before the cold air arrived. He's never seen a day above freezing yet.

Day 8 of the Arctic Blast. Snow storm #1 arrived Sunday around noon and it was still snowing at dark. First chance to look at the temperature outside and it was -2 degrees. I imagine before dawn, it was colder than that. The skies were clear; the sun out which made it feel warmer than the day before. We rushed out to check pastures and were met with drifted shut roads in places, which we plus our neighbors eventually got open. Eddie thinks we receive 8-10 inches, Maybe more. The more we rode around, the more I started to believe it. In this video, we were driving thru tall native grasses. As you can see, the snow was pretty deep in those pastures as well. Snow storm #2 arrives tomorrow. Another heavy snow is predicted. This may exceed the snow storm of February 2011 if we get more snow. But for sure, I have never seen it this cold for this extended time period, EVER. Some say we may get above freezing Friday......but I don't know. With this much snow on the ground it may stay cold awhile. I am more than ready for a warm day. For myself, and for the animals.

For Eddie and I, Valentines' Day will be spent much like other "holidays" (including wedding anniversaries).....with our cattle. This morning it was feeding in advance of the snow storm, and checking for newborn calves. As I was driving my Kubota around, I came upon this corriente heifer who had just calved. I remember this heifer when she was a calf because she had this white marking on her head which kind of looked like a heart. It made me chuckle because she had calved on Valentines' Day. Happy Valentines' Day to other ranching couples who will spend this day tending to their stock! We've been there before. We know the drill. Take care of the stock, but please be careful out there.

Update: Got some snow from 4-6 a.m. Sunday morning, but the snow really got going shortly after noon. Visibility really went down. Prior to that, Eddie was able to get out to do some pasture feeding. I was able to get around to some of the calving pastures, concentrating on the bred heifers. We have had to rescue four calves so far and bring them to our barn for a little TLC. Eddie has constructed "hay forts" to keep the calves contained for individual feeding.

Update: Our weather has been going downhill since Monday, Feb. 8th. The wind hasn't been too bad, but it has been increasing each day. Today is pretty windy. Precipitation has been light with a little freezing drizzle and rain. But that will begin to change late Saturday into Sunday with snow predicted. All forecasts say the snowfall will be significant. Spring calving for us started Sunday, Feb. 7th. My main job right now is checking bred heifer pastures. I have rescued three calves so far, due to the cold. All are doing well. Looking at the forecast, it doesn't look like we will get above freezing until maybe a week from today. To all our friends and customers out there in this storm taking care of your livestock, I pray to God for your safety and that He will give you the strength to do your job and get you thru this storm.

Bennie Adkins sadly died recently of the COVID-19 virus. Eddie's dad, Alvin E. Parker, Sr. knew Bennie as he grew up on a farm near him. Bennie's home place is now a part of our daughter Ruslyn's family ranch. Wonderful story about this honored veteran of our country.

WAURIKA — During three tours in the Vietnam War, Bennie Adkins survived being wounded 18 times.

Much warmer day today on Parker Ranch; sunny, but windy. Ruslyn and Caitlyn were horseback getting up a calf to doctor on their place; since they were saddled up, we asked them to help us rotate a group of calves. Thank you for helping Eddie and I!!!!!!
