Kyle Busch thought it was a cold.
My sister Emily thought she had bronchitis.
A former ICU nurse turned technology entrepreneur ignored pneumonia longer than he should have.

Different people. Different circumstances. The same mistake.

In this week's newsletter, we explore why the warning signs that threaten our health are often the same warning signs that threaten our businesses. The traits that make leaders successful—grit, resilience, and perseverance—can also make them blind to problems that need attention.

Business crises rarely begin with catastrophe. They begin with symptoms leaders convince themselves will pass. What symptoms are you ignoring?

What if the problem isn’t your team? What if it’s the way the goal is being translated? I recently found myself thinking about something unexpected… socks. A friend told me she had stopped caring about socks altogether. They disappear. They don’t match. They don’t feel valuable.

Days later, I was talking with a client trying to increase UPTs (Units Per Transaction)—translation: sell more socks. The challenge wasn’t the goal. The challenge was connection. Managers were pushing the agenda: “Sell more socks.” Staff responded: “Okay…”No excitement. No ownership. No results.

Because goals without meaning feel like pressure.

That made me ask a bigger leadership question: Do I want to push my agenda? Or do I want true alignment? Alignment slows you down. It asks:
→ What do people believe?
→ What feels awkward?
→ What are we assuming?
→ What have we not connected yet?

People don’t align because they were told. They align because they were heard. Whether you lead a sales floor, a company, or a family, the question remains:

Are you teaching process…or creating connection? Read this week’s newsletter: Alignment Over Agenda: Selling More Socks Won’t Save You

What’s one place in your leadership where slowing down might actually speed up results?

Hot off the press: Where in your business have you quietly accepted “good enough”?

There’s a difference between strategic good enough and resigned good enough. One is intentional prioritization. The other is exhaustion disguised as acceptance. Over time, what leaders tolerate becomes the standard.

The hardest problems to solve are often the ones we’ve stopped noticing. This article challenges leaders to audit their people, processes, and numbers, and ask: Am I choosing this, or avoiding it?

Mann University: The Leadership Advantage
Today’s organizations are demanding more from leaders than ever before. Teams are expected to move faster, communicate better, adapt to constant change, improve performance, and create healthy cultures — all while driving measurable results.

The challenge is this: most leaders were promoted for technical ability, not trained to lead people.

That is where Mann University changes the game.

Built around the principles in Leading Change by Dan Mann, Mann University is designed to transform managers into influential leaders who can create accountability, inspire performance, and lead change under pressure.

Leadership is no longer about simply managing tasks. It is about influencing behavior, building trust, coaching performance, and creating environments where people and results thrive together.

5. Navigate difficult conversations with confidence
6. Create cultures that drive engagement and performance
7. Improve communication through DISC Assessments and behavioral understanding
8. Lead teams through uncertainty and change
9. Align behaviors with revenue, growth, customer experience, and operational excellence

A world-class ropes course experience designed to push leaders beyond comfort zones and into real growth The result is not just better managers. The result is stronger leaders capable of creating measurable impact inside any organization.

Some businesses survive because of strategy. Others survive because of something much deeper: purpose.

After Hurricane Helene, Asheville’s beloved High Five Coffee rebuilt. Then tragedy struck again last week, arson destroyed their River Arts location.
What surfaced through the devastation was not anger. It was clarity. Community. Connection. Meaning.

This experience sparked a deeper reflection for me: Who are you after back-to-back insults from life and business?
Markets crash. Employees leave. Businesses burn. Plans fail. The question is not if adversity will come, it’s whether your “why” is strong enough to carry you through it.

In our newest newsletter, I explore resilience, purpose, and 5 practical ways to uncover the deeper reason behind the work you do.
Because when your identity is rooted only in profit, devastation can take everything. But when your work is connected to meaning and people, rebuilding becomes possible.

As retailers push for more efficiency, stronger ex*****on, and higher profitability, one role continues to make—or break—the outcome:
Store Manager.
This position directly impacts:
✔ Revenue Growth
✔ Team Performance
✔ Customer Experience
✔ Store Culture
✔ Day-to-Day Ex*****on

And yet, it’s often the most underdeveloped role in the business.
Here’s the opportunity most leaders overlook:

The government allows up to $5,250 per employee, per year in tax-advantaged investment toward education and development.

So the real question is: Are you leveraging it—and more importantly, are you investing enough to actually change behavior and drive results?

After completing three high-impact custom Mann University programs this year, we’re opening enrollment for our next public session:

If your Store Managers aren’t consistently driving the results you expect, this is where that changes. Secure your spot and invest where it matters most—your people.

Our latest newsletter just dropped—if you missed it, here’s a glimpse:

Emotional Intelligence isn’t soft—it’s the difference between leaders who talk strategy and those who actually deliver results.

If your team lacks focus, accountability, or ex*****on, it’s not a systems problem, it’s a behavior problem.

Recently, The Mann Group took a team into a controlled “rage room” environment, breaking glass to safely release anger and frustration so they could reset and perform. But what happens when that same frustration shows up in a meeting? How are you developing your leaders to regulate in real time?

The best leaders don’t just perform when it’s easy… they perform under pressure.

That’s EQ.
That’s ROI.

Millions on sponsorships.
Thousands on retail.
Brands drive demand.
Retailers deliver the experience.
But no one owns the customer.
And that’s the problem.

I almost deleted the email… and almost missed the lesson.
AI is getting better at opening doors.
But it’s also exposing where real skill is missing.
Connection isn’t automated.
Behavior isn’t downloaded.
That’s the work.
