Cyberattacks are estimated to impact 2 out of 3 people in Tennessee in 2024 per the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

I crack up whenever companies attempt tying their brands to something topical with a dubious link, like the flurry of Barbie-centric promos we all suffered through on LinkedIn when the new film launched. Below is another classic case of this brand su***de, yet I treasure it.

It's saved in the "favorites" album of my gazillion iPhone photos. It's become one of my favorite text messages ever, from an old beau, Dave #1 (there were three Daves in total). Dave #1 received this crudely executed-yet-unforgettable promo illegally stuffed inside of his mailbox back in 2018. Knowing my sense of humor, he knew right where to send it.

Overlooking the licensing issues for a moment, I brainstormed some experiential marketing ideas to enhance 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑨𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒓 𝑳𝒂𝒘𝒏𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝑬𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆. Here they are:

📌The “Alice Coopon” offering $10 off on the first mow. (I envision Alice's eyelinered countenance replacing Alexander Hamilton's on the fake $10 bill, with "𝘐𝘯 𝘈𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘞𝘦 𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘵" below Alice's pixelated portrait.)

📌During California's rainy season, they would run a 𝙂𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙇𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨𝙡𝙞𝙙𝙚 special.

📌Their value-add pest control service: 𝙉𝙤 𝙈𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙈𝙧. 𝙉𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙂𝙪𝙮.

📌A must-have: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝙎𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙡'𝙨 𝙊𝙪𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙎𝙪𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙧 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺

📌To stay on brand, lawncare employees would agree to dress in all black, wearing heavy black eye makeup that melted in the hot sun. After all, they SHOULD look the part. . .

𝗨𝗻𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗕𝗔𝗗 𝗘𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲

On Saturday, I read this email marketing guru's advice that 𝑠𝘵𝑖𝘭𝑙 has me scratching my head (and I'm fairly sure I wasn't exposed to head lice).

He claimed that he saw much higher email open rates when he used a subject line that read, simply, "𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙄𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙢 𝘼𝙘𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩" or, "𝙔𝒐𝙪𝒓 𝑭𝙖𝒄𝙚𝒃𝙤𝒐𝙠 𝘼𝒄𝙘𝒐𝙪𝒏𝙩," because, let's face it -- we all freak out and open those emails for fear of being hacked.

I'm 𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚 you've all read this customer experience platitude ad nauseum:

"𝘗𝑒𝘰𝑝𝘭𝑒 𝑤𝘰𝑛'𝑡 𝑎𝘭𝑤𝘢𝑦𝘴 𝘳𝑒𝘮𝑒𝘮𝑏𝘦𝑟 𝑤𝘩𝑎𝘵 𝘺𝑜𝘶 𝘴𝑎𝘪𝑑, 𝘣𝑢𝘵 𝘱𝑒𝘰𝑝𝘭𝑒 𝑤𝘪𝑙𝘭 𝘢𝑙𝘸𝑎𝘺𝑠 𝑟𝘦𝑚𝘦𝑚𝘣𝑒𝘳 𝘩𝑜𝘸 𝘺𝑜𝘶 𝘮𝑎𝘥𝑒 𝑡𝘩𝑒𝘮 𝑭𝑬𝑬𝑳."

How does this copywriting guru think he made someone 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙡 with that duplicitous email subject line?

📌 Did he inspire trust . . . or suspicion?
📌 Joy . . . or abject panic?
📌 A feeling of warmth towards the sender . . . or the desire to report him to the spam police?

His email marketing rule directly conflicts with yours truly's -- 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝘽𝙍𝘼𝙉𝘿𝙈𝙊𝙏𝙃𝙀𝙍'𝙨 -- #1 rule of email marketing (which directly coincides with my #1 admonishment to my 19-year-old son):

𝘿𝙤𝙣'𝙩 𝘽𝙚 𝘼𝙣 𝘼**𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙚!

In 𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘳 words, grow some empathy.

𝗣𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗲𝘀 👞👟👠👢𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙞𝙡 𝙨𝙪𝙗𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚, 𝙖𝙡𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙮 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙭 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 . . .

➡️ The staccato-paced, lightning-fast ALDI checker outer
➡️ An April 15th IRS payment throwing off this month's budget, and
➡️ $30 Happy Meals.

Oh, to be sure, they'll remember how this email marketing guru made them 𝑭𝑬𝑬𝑳. Let's pretend you never read his terrible advice.
