Right now the ma*****na industry offers two certainties. First, there's the certainty of rapid long-term growth in a legalized industry. We know this because the black market in North America is enormous. Funneling a steady stream of cannabis consumers over to legal channels in North America, Europe, and other parts of the world should allow the worldwide w**d industry to realize Wall Street's lofty sales expectations of perhaps $50 billion, $100 billion, or even $200 billion in annual sales by 2030.

Ma*****na stocks don't get much cheaper than this.

The World Health Organization made waves earlier this year by publishing its first ma*****na review. The WHO had lots to say, including a call to place cannabis in a less restrictive schedule of the 1961 United Nations Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs.

Here's what to expect from a government agency that's listening to what people have to say about ma*****na legalization.

A big part of the problem is that cannabidiol (CBD) may be overhyped. Curaleaf Holdings (OTC:CURLF) has already gotten into trouble for making potentially misleading claims that CBD can treat cancer, Alzheimer's and other illnesses, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. But aggressive advertising may not be the greatest risk facing the fledgling industry. Instead, health dangers related to va**ng may create the biggest obstacles for cannabis companies today. Va**ng is a popular way for people to consume both ni****ne and cannabis, and it usually involves either an e-cigarette or a va**ng device known as a v**e pen. KushCo Holdings (OTC:KSHB) is one of the major producers of va**ng products, and the company has sold more than 1 billion units since 2010.

How well Curaleaf and other pot stocks are able to grow in the U.S. will depend on the perceived risks related to using cannabis, and right now, there are still many questions.

On August 23, Illinois’s Department of Public Health reported a case of death likely related to the use of e-cigarettes or va**ng.

Online advertising giant Weedmaps said Wednesday it will begin requiring a state license number for all ma*****na retail listings on its site, indicating it will cease carrying ads for unlicensed cannabis shops and delivery services.

The move could prove an enormous boon to legal retailers that have been struggling to compete with illegal shops simply by eliminating the black-market advertising presence on Weedmaps, which remains one of the most commonly used dispensary finders by ma*****na consumers.

For Amy Manganelli, Jan. 1 is shaping up to be a busy day. That’s the day her medical ma*****na dispensary, Mapleglen Care Center, will begin selling cannabis products to so-called “recreational” users. A one-hour drive from Madison, she expects a lot of her new customers to come from the Badger State.

The 9,000-square-foot facility was only capable of growing about C$12 million ($9 million) worth of pot in a year, but that didn’t seem to matter. Ma*****na companies were surging in interest and market cap as Canada planned to legalize recreational pot sales, and companies that established at least one cultivation license were receiving beneficial treatment from Health Canada, which meant snagging the property and its accompanying license could lead to a legitimate growing business in more ways than one.

Cannabis companies that have made acquisitions at the height of excitement about Canadian legalization last year may be facing some big goodwill writedowns.

Starting next year, job seekers in New York City and Nevada will no longer have to worry about whether they’ll flunk a pre-employment drug test — and lose out on a job — because of that joint they smoked the week before.

New York City and Nevada will make it illegal to skip over job seekers because of previous pot use. Lawmakers in both jurisdictions recently passed new laws, among the first of their kind, that set guidelines for how employers can treat prospective employees who used ma*****na prior to taking a job.

The FBI is looking into potential corruption in the burgeoning U.S. ma*****na industry – particularly in Western markets – and is seeking tips to investigate.

“As an increasing number of states change their ma*****na legislation, the FBI is seeing a public corruption threat emerge in the expanding cannabis industry,” FBI spokeswoman Mollie Halpern said on a podcast released by the FBI on Thursday.

“States require licenses to grow and sell the drug – opening the possibility for public officials to become susceptible to bribes in exchange for those licenses.”
