And the Oscar goes to…a historic night for the Academy Awards took place yesterday, full of surprises and ground-breaking moments, never seen before in what is considered the most important film award ceremony of the year.

Natalie Portman payed tribute to this year’s snubbed female directors with their gold embroidered names on a cape.

Joaquin Phoenix won the Oscar for Best Actor for Joker, exactly 10 years after Heath Ledger’s posthumous win for playing the same character, a history making moment in itself. He delivered a moving speech, pleading for animal rights and paying homage to his late brother, River Phoenix.

American Factory, a documentary created by Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company won for Best Documentary Film, marking their first Oscar win.

The biggest surprise of the night: Parasite won the Oscar for Best Film, Best Direction, and Best Foreign Film, making it the biggest winner of the night, and making history as the first foreign film to win both Best Foreign Film and Best Film categories, the first foreign film to ever achieve such a feat.
