From bucket brigades to advanced response teams, Westfield’s firefighters have always answered the call

The story of the Westfield-Washington Township Fire Department stretches back to the mid-1800s, when neighbors grabbed wooden buckets and worked side by side to battle flames. No engines. No stations. Just courage and community.

By 1904, the town officially organized its first fire department, appointing R.E. Johnson as chief and purchasing a hand-drawn chemical engine. Volunteers would run through the streets, dragging carts and doing what they could with the tools they had.

As Westfield grew, so did the department. From their first motorized engine in the mid-1900s to today’s modern fleet, the fire service has remained a cornerstone of safety, education, and service in the community.

Now operating out of three stations, the department responds to everything from fires and medical emergencies to hazardous incidents and disaster calls. What has never changed is their commitment to protecting Westfield with heart, skill, and selfless service.

A new chapter in healing has officially opened in Noblesville

Riverview Health has unveiled its newly expanded and renovated acute rehabilitation unit, now named The Mindrebo Family Acute Rehabilitation Unit in honor of a generous contribution from Dr. Norman and Peggy Mindrebo.

The newly opened space features state-of-the-art equipment and a patient-centered design to serve individuals recovering from stroke, brain or spinal injuries, and orthopedic surgery.

With 24 beds and expanded capacity, this unit is the only CARF-accredited rehab facility in Hamilton County and has been supporting patients for more than 30 years.

This milestone marks the completion of phase one, with fundraising already underway for phase two to renovate additional patient rooms and bring them to the same high standard.

📣 The unit officially began welcoming patients on May 29
🎉 A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on May 16, with remarks from Dr. Mindrebo and Mayor Chris Jensen

From one student’s dream to a statewide powerhouse.

In 2009, Karl Behrens had a vision to bring rugby to Westfield. With help from his dad and a few committed players, the Westfield Shamrocks Rugby Club was born.

Fifteen years later, that vision has grown into a multi-level, co-ed program producing state champions, college athletes, and life-ready leaders.

WSRC isn’t just about fierce matches and championship wins (though they’ve got plenty of those). It’s about respect, resilience, and real community, where players share meals after games, captains lead with integrity, and students grow into strong, confident individuals.

With the continued support of Westfield Washington Schools and a dedicated network of coaches and volunteers, the club’s future is brighter than ever—including two new turf fields with lights at the Monon Athletic Complex.
No experience needed. Just heart.

Celebrating the Class of 2025: $107,400 in Scholarships Awarded

On May 20, the Westfield Education Foundation proudly awarded $107,400 in scholarships to 69 exceptional graduates, thanks to the incredible support of local businesses, community partners, and legacy donors.

From future scientists and artists to educators and entrepreneurs, these students represent the heart of Westfield’s bright future.

Major awards included the Dr. & Mrs. Malcolm Bray Science Scholarships, the Dylan McGinnis Memorial Scholarship, and the Shirley A. Gibbs Scholarship, along with contributions from local organizations like CORE Construction, CSO Architects, and The Farmers Bank.

“We’re not just awarding scholarships, we’re investing in the future of our community,” said Ashley Knott of WEF. “These students are talented, and they deserve to be recognized.”

Surprise yard signs, a heartfelt Awards Night, and messages of pride filled the air as Westfield celebrated these Life Ready Rocks.
