Bloom Where You’re Planted 🌸
First up, a huge shout-out to Bob’s Bail Bonds (Pat Childress) for being named the Wheeler Chamber Business of the Week! Pat is a steady supporter of the Chamber, and honestly, we have her and many other Wheeler Chamber of Commerce members to thank for the fact that the flower boxes in the Courthouse Square actually exist every year.
Speaking of those flower boxes, let’s hear it for the Kelton FFA Floral/Greenhouse Design Class. They teamed up with our very own flower box mastermind, Chalone Hefley. Students Caison Oswalt, Josie Robison, Abbigale Ochoa, Vivian Tucker, Nohemy Ratliff, and Lilli An Reed—along with their teacher, Hope Cotten—brought some much-needed color to the square. 🌷
Want to keep the "May Flowers" energy going? Donate to the Parkview Assisted Living Flower Market. Organized by Wheeler County 4-H, this project gives residents a shopping spree to build their own special gardens. You can donate via Venmo or contact Courtney Tyree at 806-443-4373 to help out. 🌿
Civic Duty & Spring Cleaning 🗓️
Mark your calendars for next Saturday, May 2nd. It’s a big day for two reasons: the Wheeler City-Wide Garage Sale and Election Day.
1. The Garage Sale: It’s time to fulfill your civic duty by participating in the illusion that you can actually control where your tax dollars go. 💸 If you want your garage sale featured on the official map, you have to move fast. Monday, April 27th (tomorrow!) is the absolute LAST DAY to sign up at the City Offices off Alan L. Bean Blvd.
2. The 4th of July: We know, we know—you’re still salty that the Chamber requires wristbands for the 4th of July Celebration. But look, there are plenty of ways to volunteer to earn yours! If you want to be a Rockstar Sponsor, now is the time. You’ll be featured on everything from the website to stage banners. 🇺🇸
The Wheeler Tea Room ☕
The new Picadeli salad bar at Market Square is the biggest hit I’ve seen in years. It even sparked an unintentional "Salad War" between Wheeler and Shamrock to see who could buy the most greens on opening day. I’ll be honest: for a small town, this setup makes you feel like you’ve walked into a high-end Market Street in Amarillo.
It seems the mere promise of a Data Center has everyone stepping up their game. We’re suddenly getting a laundry center and a new restaurant in Mobeetie—finally filling that space next to Cowboy Oasis Leather that’s been vacant for years.
I find it "delightful" that people only want to invest in Wheeler County when there's a corporate guarantee of success. Contrast that with the folks at Hotel Turkey in Turkey, Texas. They didn't wait for a mega-corp; they built a dream out of a historic hotel and revived their town from the ground up. Yet here in Wheeler, we wait for a mega-corporation to bring us a "man camp" before we decide the town is worth our own investment.
The Future: 12 Round Productions 🎙️
On a more local note, there is a potential podcast studio in the works! Spearheaded by 12 Round Productions (the creators of Lies of Omission and Deconstruction), this space is designed for podcasts, audiobooks, and musical recordings. 🎧
The goal? A space where you can start a podcast with no upfront costs, based on performance and ad revenue. It’s a perfect training ground for students to learn professional production and streaming. If you’re looking to invest in a unique business, reach out to Auroc Media Specialists on Facebook or Instagram.
That’s all I’ve got. See you around, Wheeler! ✌️
