I recently had my second so-so experience in a local business. To say the least I was disappointed and made the decision to no longer patronize the business. It has weighed heavily on my mind and over the weekend I thought about the popular Facebook post about our continuing to patronize fast-food restaurants after numerous mistakes and often dropping a small and locally owned business after one mistake. (My experience was not with one of our local restaurants.)

I rationalized about the amount of money I have spent in the local business since its opening and the quality of the service I received from the owner and employees and I realized, I expect more because I know them personally. I have promoted them and have had confidence in how they would treat anyone I sent their way. The confidence is diminished because of two experiences that happened back to back within weeks of each other.

I am holding counsel internally about whether I should approach the business owner to discuss my last two shopping experiences, or simply let it go. I'm still in the air...

Research shows customers' expectations are often based on business size and we react differently to unsavory behavior. We as the customer expect more from small and local. We expect them to be warmer and friendlier. On the other hand, we have become accustomed to our experiences with many of the large businesses we patronize and faulty or unfriendly service does not surprise us.

In truth, we romanticize small businesses. We patronize them because they are unique and create an authentic experience. Their marketplace power is limited and they have to be nicer to their suppliers, their vendors, and most importantly to their customers.

As business owners, we have to be aware of the higher expectations our customer base has and as consumers, we need to realize everyone has a bad or off day and unfortunately there can be more than one bad or off day.

It has long been my wish to convert everyone to supporting small and local businesses first. And perhaps I need to become more cognizant of the high expectations I hold for these businesses and realize none of us bat 1000 all of the time.

Could what you believe about yourself impact your success or failure? Research shows your beliefs play a pivotal role in what you want and whether you achieve it. It has been found that it is your mindset that plays a significant role in determining achievement and success.

What Is a Mindset?

Your mindset is a set of beliefs that shape how you make sense of the world and yourself. It influences how you think, feel, and behave in any given situation.

There are two basic mindsets: fixed and growth. If you have a fixed mindset, you believe your abilities are fixed traits and therefore can't be changed. You may also believe that your talent and intelligence alone leads to success, and effort is not required.

If you have a growth mindset, you believe that your talents and abilities can be developed over time through effort and persistence. They believe that everyone can get smarter or more talented if they work at it.

So if a growth mindset comes naturally to you, awesome! If you have a fixed mindset there are some steps you can take to focus on a more growth oriented mindset.

Focus on the journey. An important factor when building a growth mindset is seeing the value in your journey. When you're fixated on the end result, you miss out on all the things you could be learning along the way.

Incorporate "yet." If you're struggling with a task, remind yourself that you just haven’t mastered it “yet.” Integrating this word into your vocabulary signals that despite any struggles, you can overcome anything.

Pay attention to your words and thoughts. Replace negative thoughts with more positive ones to build a growth mindset.

Go ahead, be BOLD, see the things that are possible! Walk with pride and purpose and when you look in the mirror be proud when you see the success that you are!
