Last night, around 1:19am, the G*Y Media YouTube channel hit its one-thousand subscriber mark. We don’t think of this as an accomplishment for G*Y, but a benchmark for what our community can do for itself.
1000 subscribers isn’t a lot on YouTube. It’s a very small reach when compared to the slop that’s pumped out by channels with as many as 20 million subscribers. Considering that four weeks ago, we announced 100 subscribers, it feels good.
It feels good to know, that in just four weeks, another vector for our collective cultural identity has grown by 10x. The reach isn’t another voice in the echo chamber of the city, county, or state. That voice—in the form of free thought and action—stretches into neighboring states such as Colorado and Missouri and even touches ground in other continents.
No one owns or controls it. It is an ecstatic and occasionally violent catharsis that cannot be harnessed by the powerful, sequestered by the ignorant, or constrained by the cowardly. That cultural projection—our cultural projection—can become part of a larger groundswell that churns the topsoil to give fresh oxygen and nutrients to the breadbasket of ideas and shift the inertia away from persistent stagnation.
We place the credit of success squarely at the feet of our local talent. We just feel lucky enough to witness it.
