Two years ago I started illustrating a children’s book—today it officially launched.

In early 2024, I began illustrating this children’s book with authors Stephanie and Alyssa Owens, who created it to celebrate Slovenian language, food, and heritage for young readers.

A lot of life happened while we worked on it. Over the course of this project I moved across the country, bought a house, and welcomed my daughter, Billie. Stephanie and Alyssa also both welcomed babies during this time, which makes sharing this book with the next generation feel extra meaningful.

This project was especially cool because I majored in foreign language in college - culminating in a year spent teaching english on a palm oil plantation in Malaysia. I’ve always been passionate about cross cultural exchange!

This collaboration was also a full-circle moment for me. I originally met Stephanie years ago when I created calligraphy for her wedding through my stationery business Violet Paper, and that connection eventually led to this project.

I’m so proud to finally see this out in the world and grateful to have contributed the illustrations to a children’s book that celebrates culture, language, and family.

So many personal details were included in M+R’s wedding design. We featured watercolor and line drawings of the weekend’s venues and a custom tile motif was the backbone of M+R’s design. Inspired by the bricks at their Alma mater and woven through their save the dates, invitations, place cards, favors, table numbers and more ✨

l’ve loved snail mail for as long as I can remember. My grandmother was a fabulous letter writer and would mail me cards and notes with little life lessons even though she only lived 5 minutes away. We called her Ahya and she loved violets

On this day 8 years ago, Will (with lots of help from our parents!) surprised me with an engagement party.

I was sipping on mimosas and showing off my ring in the back yard of my childhood home when a neighbor asked, “Have you thought about wedding colors? What about round tables or farm tables? Will you have a plated dinner?” And honestly- I hadn’t thought of any of it. The next day, I sat down and wrote down my top 3 priorities for wedding planning. Beautiful initiations topped that list and the idea of Violet Paper was born.

My, how we’ve come a long way in 8 years! 3 makeshift home studios; design classes at Parsons; 2 cross country moves; a puppy and a baby; countless late nights applying vintage postage and 2AM bursts of inspiration; 1000’s of calligraphed envelopes; lots and lots and lots of printer ink; and 1 illustrated children’s book (more to come on that later! 😉) and I do feel like we are just getting started.
