Eleven years already. I can't friggin believe it!
I remember the phone call like it was yesterday when the doctor told me my blood sugar was 395 and my a1c was 13.8. He told me that I was diabetic. (World blown๐ฅ)
I wasn't sure if it was type 1 or 2. But I found out shortly afterwards that it was Type 1. How could a 35 year old become Type 1?
Well fast forward to 2024 and thousands of shots, pricks, worries, crashes and skyrocketing highs later, I'm hanging tough and amazed with how much the technology of this disease has changed. My blood sugar is averaging in the mid 100s and an a1c of 7.1.
I went from pricking my finger and injecting insulin 3-5 times a day to now wearing a CGM(continuous glucose monitor) and wearing a tubeless Omnipod 5 pump(where I have to only change it every 3 days).
It's the most normal I've felt in about a decade. I use my cell phone to see my blood sugar levels and use my app to dispense the insulin through the pump. No more finger pricks and stabs with the needle. It's Bluetooth and wireless technology that's helping keep me feeling like I did 11 yrs ago. It's still a daily grind and I question everything I eat, drink, and do. Life is a constant balancing act and I'm lucky I have support from my family for helping with the positivity and sugary sweets when I'm low.
It's fitting I got diagnosed on diabetes awareness month because there's more people than ever that are getting Type 1 diagnosed like I did in their 20s to even 50s. Type 2 is more widespread than ever too. If you know someone or are living with diabetes, just be supportive and understanding. You never know what someone may be going through or how they feel.
We all need to feel supported in this crazy life๐!!
Happy Thanksgiving!! ๐ค๐ผ๐ฆ
