Another busy week of travel for JPC.

Julie and Christopher headed to the University of Michigan-Dearborn for 2 days of crisis communications training and mock news conferences.

Frances presented at the TAMIO Conference in Austin, TX, about the pros and cons of agencies turning off comments on their social media.

Come for the travel pics, stay for the candid couple goals Julie captured on the jetway.

Should public safety agencies share crime statistics consistently, even when the numbers are not favorable?

Commissioner Bill Bratton’s answer was clear: yes.

He spoke about the importance of openness around crime statistics, disorder, and public safety issues in both good months and bad months.

The reason is simple: the public cannot be a true partner if they are not informed or do not trust you.

Communities are often the eyes and ears of public safety agencies. But that partnership depends on trust, and trust is strengthened when agencies communicate openly, consistently, and honestly.

Sharing the hard numbers is not “owning” the problem. It is showing the community that the agency is paying attention and taking the work seriously.

“Don’t post your work. Post yourself working.”

For us, that looks like training rooms, media coaching, message prep, social media management, crisis communications, and the behind-the-scenes moments that help agencies when it matters.

For agencies, this trend is a simple way to show what you do without overexplaining it.

Is this a trend your agency would try?

This travel post takes us to Nebraska, Delaware, and Minnesota.

Julie had a blast of nostalgia with a stop in Dewey Beach, a place that’s full of family memories with Brad and their girls.

Here’s how your agency can use this trend:

Start with b-roll of your team in action. Then add text that pokes fun at something your agency does, teaches, responds to, or reminds people about all the time.
For us, that’s crisis communications.

Not every trend has to be complicated to work for your organization. The key is making it fit your voice and your mission.

A police department could use it for traffic safety.
A fire department could use it for smoke alarms.
A city could use it for public works, water conservation, code compliance, or emergency preparedness.
A school district could use it for attendance, bus safety, or weather updates.

The best agency trends are usually the ones that still sound like you.

Is this a trend your agency would try?

Social media is not just a place to post updates.

For public safety agencies, it is one of the fastest tools available for correcting misinformation, clarifying facts, and speaking directly to the community.

Commissioner Bill Bratton pointed to the Boston Marathon bombing as an example of how quickly misinformation can spread, and how important it is for agencies to be able to respond in real time.

If your agency is not using social media strategically during critical incidents, someone else may be shaping the story for you.

If you found yourself saying “yes” more than once, this conference is for you.

Accelerate is for leaders and communicators who know crises rarely unfold neatly.

You’ll need to make decisions fast, often with incomplete information, leadership pressure, media attention, and online speculation.

Accelerate is a three-day immersive experience in which participants operate within a live, unfolding crisis scenario, practicing the decisions that will shape outcomes in real life.

Register now because the first time your team works through these challenges should not be during the real thing.
