What gifts did you receive in 2020? I don't mean physical gifts -- ones that showed up under a tree or in the mail. I’m curious about unexpected gifts. Were you able to take the lemons 2020 handed you & make some lemonade?

Early on, I received the gift of TIME. I often feel like I'm churning out projects without much time to focus on the bigger plan. I took my gift of time and charted the next phase of my business: more coaching, more strategy, less churning out tactical projects.

As I reached out for help with my new plan, I received the gift of ACCOUNTABILITY. I’m my own boss, and no one else holds my feet to the fire -- or sets goals for me. Giving part of that over to an outside resource has helped me stay on track. It’s a role that I play for my clients all the time, but I don’t often take the step to do this for myself. It’s been very rewarding

This leads me to my last gift: COMMUNITY. In business-speak, that would be my network, but 2020 brought many new people who lifted me up, helped me out, and become great resources for me. That support and feedback are what make this new network feel like a community for me.

You: I want to be as big as Kellogg's
Me: Really? Why would you want to do that?

I'm all for big dreams, but sometimes big brands are a catchall for the real goals. Kellogg's is known the world over, but they started in 1906, so they've got a pretty good running start on most brands... and they have tremendous resources at their disposal.

My question in the intro isn't meant to be snarky. I really want to know why Kellogg's seems like the ultimate goal. Maybe what you really want is to make a decent salary, see your kids at night for dinner, and take a nice vacation once a year.

Slow turning...Sometimes even when you NEED to move fast, there's just *stuff* that holds back change. Like a ship at sea, you turn the wheel and it takes a while for the vessel to catch up. Use that space... It's okay to take a pause and spend a few hours reviewing your original goals and comparing them to all the changes you've had to put in place this year.

Does it feel like your head's spinning right now? You're not alone. Lots of businesses have been doing the this year--making changes in a hurry. Beyond the obvious scrambling, what's been the biggest change to your job NOW compared to last year?

I'll start... As the business owner, I've taken back a few management roles, plus I've sped up the timeline for going paperless. AND, I've learned new ways to communicate visual projects when we can't meet face to face for a 3D, tactile experience.
