The Luddites were right!

The weavers never got the delivery jobs.

Human history has been a series of innovations that have changed the job landscape and society itself. Indeed, wonderful in many respects to have technology that improves the quality of our lives. However, there has always been one trap and that is the gap.

The gap

When the loom was invented, the new textile industry arrived. Highly skilled weavers were left to compete with machines that could produce textiles quicker and more cheaply. Then new jobs were created! With textiles being available cheaper and en masse, we had delivery jobs and sales jobs created to name but two. The next generation got to reap the rewards of the new jobs and that is truly a good outcome.

However, the highly skilled weavers were left hungry and without work as the economy changed around them and that is the gap in the innovation pattern we have seen repeated again and again.
I'm not afraid of innovation. I am an early adopter and I love technology. I'm asking us to be thoughtful about what innovation does.

So, now we have the development of AI or rather at this point LLMs. People are losing their jobs; new jobs will be created around the new evolution and land in the laps of the next generations. Jobs we haven’t even imagined yet. Again, that is wonderful. My question is: for the people laid off now who don’t get rehired, how do we fill that gap? That gap that has always been there throughout history with every new industrial, medical and technological advance.

Now, I own and run an agency, and I use LLMs for many different tasks. It is helping my small business grow and some of what I sell is what AI is coming for. Both things are true at once.
The pattern we get wrong

We assume that every advancement means total replacement, but history has shown that it doesn’t.

Electricity did not herald the end of the candle. What changed was the candle’s job. Instead of providing light, the industry evolved over years, after the arrival of electricity. Now a candle is used to create atmosphere in a room and sometimes a scent. The market for candles is now larger than it was when it was used for light, before electricity.

The candlemakers of 1890 did not become scented candle manufacturers. That took much longer and different generations accomplished it. The market evolved. The makers did not get to evolve with it.

Now with AI we see the same pattern. Let’s look at the example of Klarna. It’s AI assistant performed the work of 700 customer service agents. But later on, Klarna bought human customer service agents back on board. Not because the AI failed outright, but because the routine volume and the difficult conversation turned out to be two different products. This because handling a routine customer service enquiry and handling a complex conversation are not the same job.

I have friends and peers who have been laid off recently. These are people at the peak of their intellect and experience. Sometimes it’s because of automation and sometimes because they are being replaced by a younger, less experienced person who costs less with AI cited as the reason. Often, I find it hard to tell which is the case and I suspect the person making the decision isn’t entirely sure either.

I have no policy answer. What I have is one decision I can make myself.

When the time comes to hire an editor or writer for my agency, I will still hire a human for a significant amount of copywriting.
I will continue to use AI for a multitude of tasks and enjoy and benefit from it. AI is now a part of my everyday workflow. But an algorithm doesn't have quirks, witticisms, or the unexpected wordplay that makes people laugh, including me. A prompt cannot replace the unique, distinct voice that makes someone want to read a story. A human who knows me and writes my bio, knows how to write for me.

Maybe a machine gets there eventually, but for this, I would rather pay a person.

My question for founders and leaders today:

How do we protect the human craft that builds a brand, while navigating the pressure and delight in automating it?
How do you plan to fill that gap in your own business?

Well, if you want to hear the story of my boring old life, you could listen to my podcast episode with McKinney, a fellow agency owner right here in Woodbury.

On the other hand, if you just want to listen to Sam’s dulcet, smooth, wonderful, made-for-radio podcast voice and brilliant humor, then you absolutely must tune in now! Sam, you dark horse!!

We covered a landscape of subject matter (including AI) in a flowing, engaging conversation:

• Origin stories & the wild evolution of technology (Apple Newton MessagePad, anyone?)
• Empowering people through education so they walk out "an inch taller"
• Community, business, and starting from scratch
• AI, the planet, and fundraising
• Navigating life with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS Type 2).

Huge thank you to Sam for a fantastic conversation celebrating the stories behind our local East Metro & St. Croix Valley business community.

2026 was the year I plucked up the courage to stand in front of a camera. I spent years avoiding cameras. My mother had one photo of me as a teenager smiling, and she treasured it. I was a knucklehead when I was a young woman (no surprise there!) and for some reason I thought I shouldn't smile. I would like to point out the under development of my prefrontal cortex at that this point, although I believe it’s in good shape now. Now this year I was offered a professional photo shoot, and it was hard to refuse. Something in me changed.

I dared myself to step outside my comfort zone. And like so many things in life, once I let my guard down, I actually loved it. A newfound confidence showed up that I didn't expect. Now I smile at the camera, look forward to it, and honestly feel like a bit of a goofball, in the best way. I don't care if I look good or silly or whatever. Today I look ridiculous and more power to me! A lifetime of camera-shyness has melted away, simply because I was willing to expand my horizons.

We all have something we've been putting off because it feels uncomfortable: a conversation, a change, a dream we've talked ourselves out of. But remember: the discomfort is usually just the doorway.

Those of you who step outside the box and walk through the doorway, you become the creators, the inventors, the founders. You can be a changemaker too. Envision. Grow. Always believe in yourself.

Dare to dream. Dare to imagine. Then take that first small step. You might surprise yourself with how much you needed to and how good you feel about it.

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." (Lao Tzu)

Oh, and I intend to keep smiling and chasing the joy of life every chance that I can.

Thank you to Mycah Bain Photography for opening the door to a beautiful new experience.

Most hosting companies can't tell you who's watching your website. I can. It's me, and I take that job personally.
At Keer Keer Creative Website Design we built our high-speed VPS hosting to enterprise security standards. Your website's security shouldn't be an afterthought. It's the digital front door to your business, and we treat it that way.
Every site on our server runs on a multi-layered Defense-in-Depth stack as standard: active human oversight watching for anomalies, layered firewalls stopping bad bots cold, and custom hardened isolated server architecture built for real speed, not off-the-shelf reseller hosting.
Threats are evolving fast, automated bots, AI-driven attacks, constant probing. We built our stack to keep pace.
For clients where we have DNS access, we go a layer further: enterprise-grade edge filtering that stops threats before they ever reach the server, with an enhanced tier available for businesses that want even more coverage. We're expanding this to more sites as we partner with DNS providers and clients to get that access, and we're glad to walk you through what it adds.
We built this because we take genuine pride in protecting what our clients have built, and because fast, resilient, quiet-behind-the-scenes hosting takes real craftsmanship. This setup is ours, built layer by layer, and we haven't seen anything quite like it anywhere else.
Want to see how your current setup stacks up? Send a DM or comment "HOSTING" and we'll run a complimentary speed and security check

Urgent Security Alert: Update WordPress Core Immediately
If you manage WordPress sites, please pause and check your core version today.
A critical security vulnerability has been identified in WordPress core that allows for unauthenticated remote code ex*****on. This is a severe threat that affects a wide range of installations.
The Action Required:
• Update to 7.0.2 immediately. This release specifically patches this critical vulnerability.
• Verify, don't assume: Even if you have automatic updates enabled, log in to your dashboard or use WP-CLI to confirm that your site is running version 7.0.2.
• Audit your server: If you have suspended or "ghost" sites on your server, they are still susceptible to these automated attacks. Patch them now, or better yet, archive the assets and remove the installations entirely to shrink your attack surface.
Security is not a set-it-and-forget-it task. Automated exploits don't wait for your schedule, so please prioritize this update across your entire digital footprint today.

Mission Accomplished: $1,000 for Carolyn’s Legacy!
We have reached our goal of $1,000 raised for the American Cancer Society in honor of my mother, Carolyn.
To my friends and family, my St Paul Area Chamber and Ambassadors Committee, my Woodbury neighbors, and my incredible professional network—thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you to Maryann Malec, MA my fundriasing partner. Seeing my mother’s "Wall of Hope" completed with 100 bricks brings me a happiness in honor of my mother that is not something that I cannot put into words. You have proven that when we come together, legacy is truly the best medicine.
It is a true "Winning Season." Between reaching this milestone and a beautiful surge of new creative inquiries at the agency, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the momentum right now.
Stay tuned for the "Blooper Reel" later this week. I’m moving it to Wednesday or Thursday to make sure it gets the attention it deserves. Now that the goal is met, it’s time to celebrate with some much-needed laughter!
Thank you for being part of this journey. We did it! 💖

UPDATE: WE DID IT! $1,000 REACHED! A miracle just happened - Juan Dominguez, someone I’ve never even met, just laid the final brick to bring us home. I am officially speechless. Thank you Juan, thank you so much. 😍

ANOTHER UPDATE! Momentum is the Ultimate Medicine: 95% Achieved. 😀 WE ARE ALMOST THERE! I AM SO HAPPY!
A huge thank you to Tony Rosenow and Nate Ryther for a generous contribution that has taken our mission to $950 raised for the American Cancer Society. We are now in the home stretch—just $50 away from our $1,000 goal.

When professional networks turn into mission-driven communities, that's when real impact happens. Thank you, Tony and Nate, and the St Paul Area Chamber. Paul Area Chamber and Ambassadors Committee for your sterling leadership.

Coming Soon: Stay tuned from Keer Keer Creative for the 'Blooper Reel' -because even at 90% velocity, you have to stop and laugh. Watching MaryAnn and myself trying to record our original fundraiser video was an absolute riot!
